hey guys, i'm just trying to get some input here from you all. When benching in powerlifting form you must arch your back. Wel, after one and a half years of not powerlifting I want to become a bencher only guy. It's better than nothing right? I got scoliosis of the lowerback. I'm concerned that it'll interfere with benching. Should I be weary of this? i cant squat or deadlift due to my condition. i've tried to go back many times and do it. But, I'd just end up in pain everytime.

I don't deadlift heavy anymore. Maybe at some point in the future.
I have a herniated L5-S1 (MRI last year verified) and heavy deads just do not agree with it. I have tried...did not end well. My main lifts are squat, bench, power clean, press, front squat and chinups.
I will be starting 5/3/1 this week (next week really, wisdom teeth are coming out this Friday) with power cleans in place of deads.

for sure. i mean arch if you can, but if you can't it shouldn't stop you. i've seen some pretty big benches done virtually flat-back
kinda sucks imo. I'm cool with it and all, but it gets me thinking about how much weight I'll never be able to handle. I hate the 'strong for your size' ****501, 302, 551; 1354 @ 181

My experience dictates that there is a difference.
Don't make me look up or retype the portion of The Strongest Shall Survive where Bill Starr writes about why one should "OMIT THE DEADLIFT". Seeing as how this is the PL/SM section it probably isn't one of his most popular statements/positions.

This.
There can be significant differences in how people/their body's respond to the herniation. One of the big reasons for this, it seems, is that not all herniations are created equal.
Say that after you have aggravated the injury so bad it takes you 15+ seconds to climb in or out of the car and you can literally barely walk, and even that is painful...then when you go to bed it hurts too much to roll over and it takes everything you can muster to get back out of bed. Slowly and painfully.
Seriously, dumbass statement is dumbass

Kurt Angle won an olympic gold medal with a broken freaking neck, I am sure squatting with a herniated disc is nothing.
