Say I total 1400+ in November at 181. What true motivation is there to bulk up? Why not walk ~~188 and water cut week out to make 83 kgs? No true average height natty is realistically walking 190+ at 8% anyways. Especially since I have 2 more raw nationals as a junior since I'm a Dec 1992 b'day.
1400@180 vs 1500@203 is essentially the same wilks.
I understand bulking up if you plateau hard, but if someone seems to still be gaining strength why not just run with it?
inb4 I total 1350 in November and rage-bulk to 200+ before the year ends.Ohio State Crew

lol
I've gotta say I'm the leanest I've ever been (not close to shredded though) and I definitely am way happier and enjoying summer more.
Yea I just want to stay 10-12%ish year round.

There's a very good chance that you will hit a plateau sooner or later. Most do not stay in one weight class while making significant gains over a significant span of time. Staying less than 200 at 5'10 is a terrible terrible terrible idea if you're going to power lift. Being less than 220 at 5'10 natty is just as bad.

Why compete in something and only half ass it? Sure powerlifting isn't everything and at the end of the day it's just a hobby but why put in all the time and money and the travel to meets just to aim to be mediocre?
There is no such thing as 'strong enough'

Perfect thought. As long as you don't limit your weight class to something that is very, very light for your height (6'+, <200 lbs). That is just silly.

Was talking with a very high level strongman a couple weeks back. Took him 10 years to go from 210 to 300. He is pretty damn lean and definitely did it right. That put **** in perspective for me.Strongman Training Log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=138026593

I must be confused. What's the purpose of powerlifting? To see how much weight you can lift. The only time wilks is even a factor is when you're determining the best lifter or when figuring who wins when two people total the same. If you're worried about your wilks you're doing it wrong. Get as strong as you can and your wilks will take care of itself.

Fair enough. To me it's just a priority thing. I like being ~8% bf year round. Will that limit me at 83 kg since I'm not a super-manlet, perhaps. However, I don't necessarily think I am "half-assing" it because I'd rather stay lean year round. Even if I plateau ~1400 it's not the end of the world to me.
My goal is to maximize my total while staying lean...everyone has different motives coming into powerlifting and I respect that. Personally, I'd rather squat 500 shredded than 600 pudgy. This may be the minority mentality here, but I'm ok with that.Ohio State Crew

And I like this mentality because you're taking a slow and patient approach to strength gains, and you seem to acknowledge the fact that once you hit that plateau, you could potentially move up a weight class and remain very close to that level of leanness while getting quite a bit stronger.
It's all about the long game if you're actually interested in being successful in powerlifting and a lot of other shyt toohttp://www.youtube.com/user/njvfevfw
