I'm jealous! Still stripping my plates. I decided I'm only going to redo the plates that came as part of the set that was poorly redone before me. The others I will just clean up.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

They came out uniformly black. The hammered effect just gave it a subtle texture that did help hide small imperfections/pitting in the iron. I thinned 15% with xylene and sprayed it on so the effect was minimal and not overwhelming. The milling on the backs still pops.

Got a tip off from 2morerepz about some local york stuff.
Are all York bars made w/ the end cap or are there a few w/ the hex on the end?
There's a very slim chance they might have a bar from the pics. I wanted to know before heading out.Crews: Ivanko Barbell Crew #52, York Barbell Club #95, Equipment Crew #59

What did an original pre-usa york look like? Was just the york and 45 painted silver or was also the olympic standard barbell painted also?
and what years were those made?
thanksLast edited by smokinHawk; 05-24-2015 at 03:31 PM.

The thin 45s succeeded the deep dish 45s and came out in 1967 or so and lasted until 1992-94, when York started to off-shore produce the Hercules Oly plates while marking the USA-made plates with USA markings.
If the plates were used in competition, all letters and numbers might be painted, otherwise, only the York and 45 were painted, though I have seem 45s without any letters or numbers painted and I believe them to have come that way from the factory.

Thanks Atty, what about 35s and down? I am assuming 25 and under were just all black right?

I'd give that guy a call, maybe he knows where to find more of those old, rusty, worthless plates.
...and then go work on that backlog of email. Boiler Up (though based on that lab coat I'm smelling crimson and cream)"Sure, I screwed up that sacrifice bunt. But look at it this way: I'm a better bunter than a billion Chinese. Those suckers can't bunt at all."

Yea, I only keep the email clean on the phone. I should get around to syncing them better.
I called and texted the guy but he hasn't returned my messages. Probably got bombarded. Ad was posted around midnight and taken down around noon today. His voicemail said he was some sort of Hammer Strength and something else dealer which I found surprising. I'd think someone in the industry would know the value of those even if it wasn't his thing.
Boiler Up is the correct answer (although UIC currently pays the bills) and that lab coat smells like Old Gold and Black.

Good man! Nothing wrong with UIC either. I think I saw phish there in the fall of 1998. Hard to remember... but those stories are probably for another forum.

This was interesting.
I'll give you guys the good, bad & ugly (not in that order) of the pick up today.
The good:
Got 2 pair or 95 & 40 lb york roundheads.
Also picked up a loner 35 lb plate.
The ugly.
They had lone round heads: 45, 55 & 100.
I really wanted to take the 100, but I have a pair of hex & I can't justify the space for something I won't use.
The bad.
Well, the three 45s 2morerepz originally mentioned to me are "on hold by someone from Texas." I wonder who!? Seems like there's a miscommunication. The owner wants $120 a f'n plate.... not $0.60. I won't pay that kinda dough. I think the owner didn't understand 2more didn't want to drive from Texarkana to pick them up. I'll see how it goes.
I noticed, looking here, that I missed out on some York 10s. I may end up going back & picking some up.
I'll need to study the pics on here better for next time. They looked like the 10s from ffrink's post.
I also grabbed what looks like a vintage Marcy plate & some Ivanko stuff.
I guess I'm finally a York man.Crews: Ivanko Barbell Crew #52, York Barbell Club #95, Equipment Crew #59
