I'm pretty fast off the floor and die at lockout. So, generally I train most of my conventional pulls from a deficit and try to stay conscious of my starting position. I also do sumo block pull work. The thing that makes me think that doing short block pulls might have some merit is that my entire back was thrashed after doing them the other day, much the same way that it feels after a huge grinder 3rd attempt in a meet.

Brace yourselves.... Another discussion ending in "it depends" since we are all special little flowers. Nothing is definitive with any of this. Although valid suggestions to assist, none of it can be a "rule". Thankfully there are definitive answers in some things in life. What is my favorite food? All of it. How much weight would I like to lift? All of it. How many dollars would I like in the bank? All of it... See guys, we all want the same things. Friendship....

Agreed with Eric. No absolutes. I do think block pulls CAN be useless for a lot of lifters because they don't know how to do them correctly. I also think lots of lifters do their block pulls at too high of a setting. Similar to board presses...they do them from a height where they fail. Blocks/boards should be set up right under where they fail the lift, not at.
I actually agree with this to an extent.
I also think most people who have "lockout issues" try and blame it on a weakness rather than realize they have a terrible starting position/technique. I was guilty of this until Bill yelled at me for about a year straight and got me to hip hinge finally. All Time WR Squat: 785 @ 220 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0GtHNRdHeM

...was more than a year.
and a lot of people who have "bad lockouts" do have bad positioning off the floor, or are only "fast" off the floor because they've sacrificed good leverage position for lockout.
Block pulls are great for making your hips stronk. If you're failing a deadlift because of weak hips...then they'll help your lockout. A lot of people who fail deadlifts "at lockout" do not have weak hips.
A lot of people can do block pulls and just get overall stronker and get rid of their "lockout issue" because they're just much stronger than they were before they did block pulls.*Mods/CS will not, nor can they change your username, so don't ask*

I did a bunch of DB flyes the other day and my chest was sore as chit. Does that mean flyes are the key to fixing my bench or that I haven't done them in a while? (being a bit of a dick here but you get the point).
If I was going to help someone that had issues at lockout, I would suggest accommodating resistance on standard deads, RDLs, good mornings and to a lesser extent GHRsTraining log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=165829701

Guys, guys, guys, guys, guys. Guys.
Let's be realistic here.
Deadlifts are stupid. It's only a matter of time before squat and bench meets take over. Just accept it.It'd be like staying fat while running marathons because it's more impressive to finish a marathon when you're overweight. It might be impressive in the short run, but in the long run it just doesn't make any sense. ~breathinglife

I just got off the phone with Edge, dude was super cool. We ended up talking for 15-20 minutes about the combo bar, bench pressing and Mike Wolfe. Lol!
