I'm so sick of this mentality being applied to everything 'only the people who don't brag about whatever they do are the best' it's fuccking retarted and contrived.

the smartest person I've ever known starting playing piano when he was like 3 and was composing jazz and classical music by the time he was 10.. He was ridiculously good at science, math, and programming.. He went on to study jazz/music composition in college and has written a ton of pieces since high school..
he was very introverted and would go into bouts of depression for a couple weeks.. he still is probably the smartest person I've met/know personally regardless of age.. srs.

I'm going to disagree. See: Richard Feynmann, Stephen Hawking.
These guys are able to take extremely complicated and abstract problems and present them in a manner that is easily understandable. The fact that they are able to make that leap from abstract and complicated to simple and logical is a sign of intelligence and part of the reason WHY they are able to tackle these problems.** JNCOs and spiked hair Crew**

Exactly. Some people don't give a damn if they're bragging or obnoxious or showing people up. They're still smarter than the people who get mad at their vocabulary selection.
I'm probably the smartest guy on the misc, but I'm not here to sound smart. I'm here to post porn in hopes of reps, piss people off in the sports section, and, on a serious note, continue to learn about and work towards my bodybuilding goals.
LOL at guys who say people who use big vocabs are just trying to show off. You try learning 4000 some new words and get back to us, plebeians.

Guys I've always been gifted when it comes to my intelligence, but lately I've been depressed a lot. I think it has to do with the fact that I don't have much money, and made a few bad choices when I was younger(dropping out of college to play poker) so my opportunities are limited. How do I deal with my situation? I know I have to look forward, but its tough for me to see where I'm at right now and not get depressed. I just wish someone would notice me and my ability so I could do something. I feel like my gifts are being wasted, and before long I'll be too old to be of use. Fking job market blows here in the US, and even though I was a 4.0 student in high school, scored super high on SAT, the only jobs I can get are service or labor jobs due to no college degree. feelsbadman My only real solution is starting up a business myself, but that takes a lot of money for advertising, etc. to get it off the ground.

Absolutely, I agree that you have to have the knowledge first in order to explain whatever it is that you are trying to explain. I also agree that it is probably a separate trait that is related to intelligence. I'm just saying that it's not the thing that defines intelligence itself but it is something that may be used as a tool to help determine it which I suppose is the point of the thread. In that case, you're absolutely right. I should have been more clear, that was my fault.
It's funny I actually thought about those two people in particular as I typed my original post. Then I wondered what about all the people that ARE smart but we just don't know it because they never communicated their ideas or explained complex concepts simply with the rest of the world? Or what about all the people who are experts in their field and can explain ideas within their scope brilliantly, stuff that they are already well-versed in because they are knowledgeable, but when posed with a novel problem they wouldn't really be able to tackle it because they can't synthesize new ideas? In other words, being knowledgeable and a good teacher and being smart may not necessarily be one in the same. Are there people who exist that possess both traits though? Definitely.
I guess our difference of opinion comes down to semantics. When I think of a smart person, I think of someone who can effectively and efficiently solve problems, even if they can't necessarily explain it well. I had some professors in college that were very brilliant people but they weren't necessarily good communicators or teachers. It probably has more to do with personality than intelligence.
You definitely make a very valid point though. It probably is a sign of being smart, but I don't think it's a tell-tale sign.Last edited by CleverNickName; 07-31-2010 at 02:02 PM.

When I see someone that has an open mind and can think for themselves and has common sense, I consider them intelligent.
I used to know so many kids in highschool that knew all these facts from school, like biology and stuff, but when it came to knowing about the world, they were so sheltered. I don't consider them intelligent. Anyone can memorize facts. In B4 "Strong 1rd post"
