Wrestling starts on the 1st. US sending a very strong freestyle team. Should be fun.

Simone Biles has quit on Team USA.
I am a big fan of Miss Biles but I do not think you get to call yourself the Greatest of all Time, and them quit on your teammates because the pressure is too high for you.RWGFY

Dude, she had the twisties. Not worth risking injury IMHO, and someone else on the team now gets an opportunity to perform on the world stage.

Was watching some High jumping yesterday and the jumpers from Italy and Qatar tied and instead instead of having a jump off, they decided to share the gold medal
This was pretty cool, I didn't even know it was a thing.𝓐𝓲𝓻 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓬𝓮 𝓥𝓮𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓪𝓷 1976 - 1999 - 𝓒𝓪𝓷𝓷𝓪𝓫𝓲𝓼 𝓔𝓷𝓽𝓱𝓾𝓼𝓲𝓪𝓼𝓽 𝓼𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓮 𝓽𝓱𝓮 1960'𝓼

IIRC neither of them faulted, which is pretty rare to see in all the HJ I did. At least in HS, the one with the least amount of faults would win.
Either way, saw this moment, very cool.
The mixed gender 4x400 was an entertaining watch as well. Some glorious bootys. Lieke Klaver from the Netherlands...just wow.
Reminded me of HS a bit. We used to have a "fat man" relay in HS. A kid that threw shot put and myself were actually really quick and previously ran the 4x100, so we dominated the fat man relay 4x100. Used a banana as the baton one time, football another.
I read on WSJ the drama queen Simone is going to give gymnastics a go again. Must have found some street meth to keep her going.Last edited by _zman; 08-02-2021 at 11:01 AM.

Also some good eye candy on the Canadian and Cuban beach volleyball teams.
I was involved in a couple jumpoffs when the # misses tiebreakers were even. But I didn't win a lot. I was the 1981 high jump champion of what is now the Horizon League, but didn't win a lot of other meets.
I loved the fatman's relay. When my son was in high school, there was a fatman's relay and the eligibility is that you had to be over 200 lbs. The team wanted to see Demetrius run. Demetrius was the #1 receiver recruit in the country as a sophomore, but ate himself into a tight end and then a lineman and got an SEC football scholarship but ate his way out of football in college. Anyway, by high school senior year he was pretty fat and throwing the shot, but they still thought he'd be fast. They had only one other fat thrower but wanted to see Demetrius so for the other two runners they recruited a guy who became a college fullback and was over 200 lbs and my son, who was mostly a jumper but was over 200 lbs and became a D1 All-American in the decathlon in college.
The first leg the other fat thrower ran and was about even with the other fatmen (two other SEC linemen in that relay btw), then my son took over and sprinted away while the crowd booed about cheating and then the fullback guy took off just as fast or faster, so they were far ahead by the time Demetrius got it. He was really fast, but it was kinda anticlimactic. If they had to do it again, they would have jogged to stay behind the other fat guys and then watch Demetrius run them down.
Here's an example of a big man's relay (not my son's):

I didn't catch the Cuban team, but agreed on the Canadian team, just WOW.
What did you end up jumping? I think my best was 6'3, I had no form or flexibility, just solid hops. Ended up placing at state with no experience. Man I miss track and field days...we had so much fun. We even did a medley relay? I think it was 200, 400, 2x800? I forget, but I ran the 200 with no experience and couldn't breathe for about 10 min after hahah.
Wish I had gone to a larger school so I could have tried decathlon etc.
We didn't have a weight limit on the fatman 4x100, you just had to be in field events only. My friend that threw shot was 6'3, 225lb of solid muscle, freak of an athlete, ran somewhere in the 11s. We never got beat, not even close.★★★ A State of Trance Crew ★★★

Was almost painful to watch but our long jumper got to around winning length in the last jump 8.40 - ish , but hit the board by just 1.4 cm. Frustrating with these atletes that have the potential to go big, but just a tiny bit of focus etc is missing. Instead end up 7th or so. Same deal for others as well but still.

Wow missed this, I only did it for 2-3 years but can relate and miss those days...hence following what's going on as much I can. I do enjoy checking out junior championships and competitions the most since can kind of get nostalgic but also get a sense of who or what is coming next. I got a few national medals in the middle distance running, but if I had a time machine I'd try decathlon cause was decent at most things and had a crazy session (ok bit silly since all young) where won youth "states" in high jump, hammer throw, and 800 m. Strange combo, lol. Ok redicilous maybe holding onto these memories since was so young but they stuck with me all these years and maybe I try for mostly fun to do some veteran track later, ppl do that up to 100 yrs old now and seem mostly be for enjoyment

Same, only did it 2 years, but I'll never forget a lot of the shenanigans that went on. For some reason all the HS drama was gone and we just had a lot of fun.
Every now and again I see news about people still competing based on their age group. I might have to look into it

No worries about that - just fun seeing some ppl can relate. Maybe we'll meet in some over 60, 3 ft high jump competition .
Speaking of, this is the world record and jump that inspired many here by our local guy in the late 80's (2.42 m (7 ft 11+1⁄4 in)):
Don't tell me white men can't jump lol. They don't really jump this high anymore.
It may look like Chaz but it's not him.Last edited by steffo99; 08-03-2021 at 10:01 AM.
