A lot of these drills can be done at home.
After making exceptionally sure that the gun is unloaded, you can draw from the holster in your living room. You can work reloads for rifles or pistols at home. You can get into the various field positions with your rifle and dry fire.

Basically a .22lr is great to practice with. It is cheap to shoot. Many of us buy versions of our favorite weapons in .22lr so practice carries over to the defensive weapons we use.
I personally have a sig 1911-22 for this purpose, and i know farley has a ar15-22 for a similar purpose of training.
Edit: DON'T BUY A .22LR FOR SELF DEFENSE*Misc Firearms Crew Illuminati*

Left: Blackhawk low visibility plate carrier
http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Low...ier,711,83.htm
Right: Condor Crye-Precision carrier
http://www.condoroutdoor.com/qpc_qui..._multicam.aspx
I find that both work well and seem to be put together perfectly fine for my needs. They're not PIG carriers, but I don't wear them 12 hours a day five days a week either.
The plates are TAP Gamma Plus plates (this was the best review I found on plate effectiveness http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=697092)

You're fine.
Do you have a budget, or ideas?
Is there a chance you will want to carry the handgun at a later time?
A .22lr semi auto rifle, like a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 795...and then a Glock 19 or Glock 17 with a .22lr conversion for it would be a great way to go.

What I didn't like reading about the gamma plus plates:
"Back Face Deformation: These plates had larger BFD, similar to the previously tested TenH plates--soft armor backing is highly recommended."
Personally I don't think I want to buy plates where it is highly recommended to also wear soft armour under them so you don't get injured by deformation on the back of the plate.

Haha, yeah I knew that already - just trying to get into shooting.
Budget... I'd say somewhere between poverty level and minimum-wage job level.
Carry... small likelihood. Not sure if I feel comfortable with it or if my job would allow it. Most likely for home protection.
My end goal for firearm ownership is for self-defense purposes and SHTF situation (I hope that last reason doesn't sound dumb).Currently training to become Goku (srs). Status: Turtle hermit training, not yet a Saiyan.

Question: How many cycles of a magazine do you like to get before you trust it? Let's say it's a known-good rifle and a magazine manufacturer/type that has a good reputation.
I only have 6 AR magazines that I have proven/can really trust. I put new followers in all of my 30 round NHMTG mags so I need to run them again to trust them, and I sold most of the PMAGs that I had been using.
And ammo is so expensive right now, I can't afford to shoot a bunch of rounds to really test mags. I'm thinking about just loading htem up once with 30 rounds and then calling it good. They wouldn't be the mags kept in the rifle, I reserve that for mags I have used more extensively, but you see where this question is going.
What do you do/consider a good standard?
