Hey bros,
Just started nursing school 2 days ago and am already miserable. Not that it's hard or anything but I just feel completely out of place and in it for all the wrong reasons. I see all the other students seem to have a passion for it and I have never had a passion for it. I was constantly reinforced by my parents to go into the health field since I was 15 and never really felt like I had any other choice so now here I am. I have a feeling I am going to get burnt out so I am going to give it a semester to see how it goes. If I'm miserable the whole time I am going to drop out and pursue something in the business/industry field where I feel I belong. What do you guys think? What would you do in my situation?
A lil background, I am 23 and already have a bachelors in health sciences 3.45 gpa.
My dad is a successful entrepreneur, why he pushed me down the health field when he would never do it himself is beyond me.
Please any advice or wisdom from the older brahs would be greatly appreciated as I am completely torn and distressed from this.

Nursing school is garbage. Unfortunately you have to deal with all the trash before truly benefiting. Think of the human body as a car that needs repair. You have to understand how the car (human body) works so you can fix it. You have to want to learn how to do this. If you don't, I can't say the profession is right for you. If you have a drive to succeed and become an advanced practitioner, serious cash will flow your way.
Most nurses have **** for brains. This is also the bulk of your class. You have to ignore their bs and put on a friendly facade. Your mission is to just get through school.
You have to see the big picture.
Only you can decide whether it's right for you. Good luckCRNA Crew

there is a spot in nursing for everyone. informatics, ICU, ER, Biotech consultant, etc.
its not a bad degree to have a fall back on to help you support yourself for another degree.
my dad was an entrepreneur as well. He wanted me to do nursing but I never pursued it until I volunteered at the hospital cause my grandmother was sick with cancer. I didnt do it for my father though, I did it for my grandma.
There is something called transference, I think of my loved ones who I lost and push it toward patients with similar situations as my grandmother.Last edited by DatMurse; 08-31-2016 at 05:26 AM.

We're doing an I&O for this hypothetical patient, I'm getting a difference of 200ml between I & O, am I using the paragraph at the top correctly?
I'm getting Input: 2,115 ml OUTPUT: 1,915 ml
So from 7am-7p 75ml/hr NS, then at 3pm it gets increased to 100ml/hr
So at 3PM when it switches it wouldn't be 175ml/hr for that hour then back down to 100ml/hr the next right?

you dont add the 100 and 175 bro. it was increased to 100 mls an hour.
his flow rate never decreases again.unless it says he was had a flow rate for an hour at 175 then thats what you would mark for the hour and then reduce the rate. or Bolus. then the rate would be altered
ex. eric was driving down the road at 35mph then he increased his speed to 50mph.
he is at 50mphFrom Houston, now I am in San Diego

Don't listen to this guy.
Finish it. You have a potential 6 figure job to fall back on when you're done with your degree at 25-26. You can always support yourself into something else. Not to mention the nursing field is diverse in opportunity. Not everyone faps to being a bedside nurse like the morons in your program who have a passion for something they've never done before.August 2023:

Really? He was pushed into nursing by his parents even though he has zero interest, he's miserable, he wants to drop out and go into business where he "feels like he'll belong."
I know people that hated nursing, but did it anyways, they are some of the worst nurses I've ever met, the only people more miserable than them are their poor patients.
This guy should have never started in the program in the first place. I see the same stuff with SRNAs, you have to want to do this stuff, if not, what's the point anyway?CRNA Crew

24weekers don't even look human - eyes still fused etc, disturbing.
In terms of the job stuff, if you are some business douch bag hates work, so what, but miserable nurses are often super low quality providers - not the kind of people I want caring for my family.CRNA Crew

I hated nursing in nursing school (1st semester). Nursing school barely gives you a glimpse of what it's like to be an RN. Your first bit into it you haven't even gotten over the awkwardness of patient interactions. Telling someone to quit before they've even gotten started is a generally crappy way to advise.

Persevere, power through, get some experience in something. Don't quit at the first sign of adversity and leave a great career path (and potentially a bridge to other career paths) behind because it got hard. Take pride in your perseverance and affinity for sticktoitiveness and see where it leads you.
And yeah, I 100% disagree with your assessment to turn soft at the first available opportunity.August 2023:

Meh, entering a field because your parents are forcing you is a distaster waiting to happen. Guy should have never started. He wants to do something else, why stick it out with nursing? Just out of principle?
Doesn't sounds like he's struggling, he just hates it and wants to do something else.
Although I'm no longer clinical faculty, I still work with students a lot - honestly if they don't want to be here, they can get the f out, as there are plenty of people that would kill for their spot.CRNA Crew

I already addressed the bold sufficiently. To the italicized...
Hates it after 2 days = quit?
To the underlined... I hear you. IMHO it's only a wasted spot by him if he quits.
I hope it works out for him no matter how he handles it, I agree to disagree with you.August 2023:

To be clear, I would never tell a student to quit based on their initial impression, but in this case it's the fact that the guy indicated that his parents pushed into nursing and he wanted to do something else (business or some ****).
Honestly, don't care that much, agree to disagree is fine with me.CRNA Crew

Maybe one of you guys could help me with this a small part of my case study. It's a patient with lupus complaining of lack of energy. I would imagine a CBC would be ordered to take a look at RBCs and hemoglobin due to autoimmunity. Possibly a renal panel to evaluate kidney function since the immune complexes can be deposited there. Can anyone think of any other tests I would order?

If your doing nursing, or any medicine really, for cash then that's not good. Nurses make very good money compared to the ordinary population and you have solid job security, but for how much studying is involved, and then all the clinical hours and paper work, you could have just gotten some sort of finance degree and made more money for arguably less work.
That being said, I'd stay with it for a semester or even a year. Do you like science? I really liked the mix of science and social science of nursing school. And unlike other degrees you actually use your knowledge on a daily basis that you gained during school.
You got into nursing for the money, how much money do you think nurses make? In Ontario we start at $31/hr and go up to $44/hr after 8 years (55-85k/year), but here finding a full time permanent job is unlikely. In the states getting full time work is easy but I've seen RN wages as low as $22/hr for new grads.Eat Right. Lift Heavy. Be a Fat Manlet.

It will be rife with disorganization LOL. I remember my first day they didnt even have signs for which building (which kind of resembled a trailer) was which. I was almost an hour late because there was no one in the building I was sent to and then no one who knew where I was to go.
But seriously, good luck. Enjoy SD, I miss it terribly. What's Spicy Training For?? LIFE MOTHER F-ER!
