Had a Harley, want another. It would mainly be for busting around town as my motard does fine for commuter duties. I'd kill for a west coast club style FXR though.

Yeah like was said above stage 1 would be upgrading the exhaust, air cleaner and a tune. It gives better performance over stock but it's not a massive upgrade
Stage 2 would be something like "light" engine upgrades. Perhaps changing cams in addition to the stage 1 upgrades
Stage 3 would be big engine upgrades. So better heads, cams, perhaps increasing displacement and a handful of other things in addition to stage 1 upgrades
I don't think there's exact definitions for these aside from stage 1. I'm no expert either so someone else may be able to explain it better

that's my basic understanding too, and i think stage 1-3 change depending on the vehicle. Autothority had stage 1-3 upgrades for the 911 turbo i had. stage 1 was tune, 2 was intake, better tune, exhaust, 3 was bigger turbos or something, etc.
the advantage of things like the stage options is system approach. if someone just puts different exhaust on, might make it run better or worse, same with intake, but by doing both with a different jetting or tune, the whole system is more optimized to increase power and maintain drivability.Axe, author of "No Limits - No Regrets"

good stuff, thanks for that.
i'm aware of car garages offering "stages" as tuning packages that sub-sumize previous stages (stage 2 requires stage 1 and stage 3 requires both), just wasn't sure it's a standard offering for all harleys...
any way, this thread lacks pics, so i'll post what my wife wants for our wedding anniversary (FAT BOY):

Just an FYI Porsche didn't design the engine Harley racing did Porsche was asked to make the engine last for 100,000 miles not just one race. Since 2007 all Vrods have had 5 gallon tanks. This is the best bike Harley has made I have put over 50,000 miles on mine. Still can do 0 to 60 in under 4 sec and can hit a 100 in 5 sec. Cant beet going down the highway knowing that you have all that power in 5th gear and can pass anything on the road when you need to.

10-4 on the vrod engine design info. couldn't remember all the details. one guy i built a chopper for years ago rode a nightrod rental once and absolutely loved it. i've never owned one, but they are sharp looking an higher engineered than twincams.
some cool pics, all. love to get my hands on that old panhead and make it sparkle!Axe, author of "No Limits - No Regrets"

So i was down at the local harley-davidson dealership to go talk about their deals they've got going on for the FatBoy and VRod muscle (for my wife and me respectively).
The dealer mentioned that the new 2015 models will be out (introduced and orderable) next week, perhaps the VRod will even get a Flat Black color optiok this year, same as the FatBoy LO (special).
I just wanted give you brahs a heads up, since prices for the current models will fall shortly, so you can save some cash for gear if you wait a bit and get the "current-model-2-weeks-ago" bike.
Personally i always need the newest, and so i'll wait for the dealer to call me next week and let me know what options are available...IT Contractor: feel free to ask me anthing about the industry...

I told myself a few years ago that I will never finance a motorcycle... so I won't be buying any new Harleys.
Friend of mine has a Street Glide that he bought new when he was 22 and working in the oilfields in west Texas, and actually had money. Dat feeling when you pay $22,000 for a motorcycle and get 18% on financing... holy **** he's a moron.
