That's because in sports like football or hockey you don't "grapple" the guy but hard contact is typically used instead. Rugby is also alpha and I agree that basketball kinda sucks (I find it boring because there is too much scoring). But the concept behind rugby and football is different. Or rather the sports (rugby and north-american footballs) went different directions over a century ago.

There's always going to be an argument about NFL vs Rugby, Aussie Rules etc.... Only thing I will say is this. Yes, the NFL players wear pads and helmets and the rugby guys don't. Let them bring their non-padded, non-helmeted selves to America and play in a game against the NFL players. I'm sorry, they wouldn't last much after the first play.
And hey, I'm fair enough to say that an NFL player probably wouldn't do too well in rugby either.
They are 2 totally different sports that can't be compared.

do you know why?
ever heard of president roosevelt? he was one of europes saviours, he made it into law to use protective gear because many professional/collegiate football players were dying/being mamed due to injuries in the game.
it get the feeling you don't like american football because you don't like the u.s., don't be so biased.
i thought europeans were supposed to be so liberal and open-minded-------guess not.
i can watch a rugby game and have. local universities in southern california have teams.
no hate but trying playing american football with no protective gear and lets see how you fare.

Ignorance is strong here,
We could easily play football with out the helmets and shoulderpads but that would definitely TONE DOWN the violence.
No helmet and pads = more cuts and scrapes
Helmet and pads = more force full and violent collisions, more broken bones, more organ trauma, more brain trauma
They way professional football is played, everyone would literally be dead after the first quarter if there were no equipment.

Yeah and boxing with out gloves is bloodier and messier doesn't mean its not more violent overall when they are used though.
There is a difference between surface damage and the internal damage done repeated by repeated forcefull blows to the head.
The game as it is played = more violent with pads and helmets.
There is more of a chance of getting your skull cracked open and bleeding to death with out pads but the game cannot be played at the highest sustained level of psychical violence with out the padding.
How is this hard to understand!

i agree top level football protects players too much, its cuz theres too much money in it, its not affordable to let top players be injured
but all these people saying football is a pussy sport need to go somewhere outside of the US and play a game of street football, no ref, no red cards . . . i guarantee half of those people would just puss out after 10 minutes and the other half would change their mind

No they do NOT.
Rugby players do not repeatedly sprint full force into eachother and smash heads together!
Football players do this. 260lb linebackers vs. 235lb running backs moving at very high speed.
Yes their skin is protected from cuts by the helmet, but what do you think is happening to your brain when you get jacked up playing football. It is getting smashed around in your skull like a blender ball in a shaker cup.
Quit being so dumb, this is easy to understand.

true but much of the nfl - american football hate is displaced hate against the u.s.
look at how many people overseas bash american culture and music, yet is the most copied form of both in the world.
americans get called out for being arrogant but look at the non-american posters in this thread..........................its like the" ******* calling the metrosexual a homo".
oh sh!t, new misc meme!

Despite protective equipment and rule changes to emphasize safety, injuries remain very common in football. It is increasingly rare, for example, for NFL quarterbacks or running backs (who take the most direct hits) to make it through an entire season without missing some time to injury. Additionally, 28 football players died from direct football injuries in the years 2000-05 and an additional 68 died indirectly from dehydration or other examples of "non-physical" dangers, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research.[26]
Concussions are common, with about 41,000 suffered every year among high school players according to the Brain Injury Association of Arizona.[27]

I think you've got him mixed up with Winston Churchill... Standing alone for 2 years as a tiny island against Nazi Germany.
On topic, I like NFL, but I prefer watching Rugby because I find it more action packed without breaks everytime someone goes down. I also like the flowing passing moves that often happen in Rugby whereas in NFL its one pass from the QB. It might be that I have no clue about the tactics of the NFL but I don't find it as exciting to watch as a game of rugby is. And football's not a pussy sport in the British leagues anyway, in most of the diving videos it's foreign players doing it. Lower down the football tier it is a very physical game with more being let slide by the referees.Last edited by DaveJH; 03-20-2010 at 03:08 AM.

you have not seen nfl hits............people have died without protective gear.
i guess hockey is beta too then because they were protective gear.
there's too rugby players that have migrated over to the national football league................guess what position they play??? they are kickers.............lulz!
no hate, they are two different sports and both are respective in their talents.
breakdown the game in terms of speed, intensity, strategy and overall talent.....this is all i need to say.
you have 330+lb lineman that can run a 4/40.. look at the average weight/height of an nfl player....bigger doesn't always mean better but it does serve as a checkpoint to gauge the above.
again, no hate............both sports ... rugby/american football are alpha compared to football soccer.

Exactally
No one even said football is a better sport. Simply that it is a more violent high impact sport.
I guess you can call tough different things.
It is not possible to do this repeatedly with out pads. Clawing away at someone like in rugby is tough, but the sport does not even come close to the violent collisions you see in football...
Watch and stfu.
^And that is an exhibition for fun game...Last edited by AlphaMisc; 03-20-2010 at 03:17 AM.

1- I am not american
2- I have played 6 seasons of soccer and 3 seasons of basketball.
Srsly basketball kicks it's ass. 1- more fun, 2- it's rougher AT TIMES, soccer you are just running alongside another person...maybe a push or a nudge. Also soccer plays look pussy while even though you don't need to be muscular for bball, most basketballers are.
Quit soccer as soon as i realised how **** it was, aged 12. Hockey ever since =PRep Back 2k+ only

Speaking as a Brit the reason so many people over here love soccer is because it's our nations signature sport and plus no one really knows much about american football. Growing up through school most guys play soccer during lunch breaks etc...(I enjoyed this too)
however like many others I now hate the sport, fake diving, overacting really irritates me. Also thought American football was over glorified when I was younger but have recently joined the local team in my city and all I can say is that I am in love with it. Having played both, in my opinion American Football is definetely more 'Alpha' and i'd say to everyone in this thread try playing both because away from the tv they are both very fun to play.Current: approx 185lbs

i've seen hits from both sports, nfl hits have a higher impact...........its been proven already.
tough is subjective here because we are not using a constant indicator to judge its parameters.
both sports are tough, play american football with out pads and get a full contact hit...............trust me.............................. you will have bones crushed/broken. it happens in pick-up games(backyard, informal games on a field/street/park) every weekend.
if you think rugby's "tougher"....good for you brah...i'm a fan of both sports including beta a$$ soccer football(as the misc puts it).

no the pads dont make it beta hockey is a awsome sport
it dosent matter how big said football players are there not runing a 4/40 for a full game
they have a 30 second play then stop and repeat rugby isnt like that there allways doing somthing.
you dont realise that kicking is a huge part in rugby like one of the main aspects in the game so coming in to america as a kicker means nothing.
but seriously there both awsome sports and i apreciate them for what they are i just think rugby is more alpha

find a rugby player that can do that? i believe only two were posted and these players have since retired(former thread).
have a 330+ lineman come and tackle you with a 4/40 speed.
the tackles in american football have a higher impact..............nuff said.............you are beating a dead horse brah.
cheerio to you ol' chap.
