Pretty smart from a business perspective, they're incentivizing quality work on the server's part and at worst they have to close the gap to minimum wage. At best they're getting satisfied customers who are paying almost the entirety of the server's wages anyways

Tipping 5 on a 105 is far from right lol. You tip higher the more you spend because your table is requiring more attention.

The person who tipped 5 on a 105 is stingy af but I don't agree with businesses that pay minimum wage, some states the minimum a server is paid can be as low as 4 dollars,in Cali it's 10.5-11.

Edit: also the way tip is distributed varies, some places the person designated on the table takes the full tip, other places make you put everyone's tips in a jar and it is divided equally among all servers working that day.

Tip out makes the most sense because the success of a service is not entirely up to the servers. An efficient excellent kitchen makes the dining experience and a good server follows through.

In any case, what you and others aren't really seeing is - perhaps the service sucked? I have had bad experiences and left low tips. I have also left huge tips. Of course, I agree with you. I've seen good servers that do get a good tip from me (friendly, accommodating all that jazz) and rude servers who quite frankly have that (I don't want to be here vibe) that won't get a good tip. I rarely tip badly out of courtesy but I do tip less when the dining experience is completely awful.

I believe if the server doesn't make minimum wage after taking into account whatever tips they got, then the employer has to make up the difference. So she isn't making $2.63/hr, shes making *at least* minimum wage

The whole myth about waiting staff making less than minimum wage is such bullchit and only dumbassses still believe it at this point. It is federal law that servers be paid at least regular minimum wage, with the employer covering the difference if their tips don't add up to it or greater. Usually, wait staff make out like bandits after tips considering the level of skill required to do the job. Don't even get me started on states that require they be paid at least straight minimum wage on top of tips.

If I order a filet Mignon instead of a sirloin and I pay 20 more dollars for it am I requiring more attention? No, I'm not you stupid fuk. I'm simply buying a higher priced item. Why should I tip more for the same amount of work becuase I can afford a higher priced meal? Tipping is socialism.
