Been hard to squeeze a ride in night with kids baseball / softball. Wife is already giving me chit about never seeing me. So out of pure necessity I started riding before the kids go to school.
It was almost 100 here this week and 60 in the am. Thank god my family got me the Garmin headlight for xmas - it is a total game changer when riding in the dark.
Ive seen more animals fkn this week than I have seen in my entire life. No cars on the road. I think I'm sold.

Exactly.
I can't imagine doing an evening ride at this point.
You should try doing your morning rides fasted. It really helps to further simplify a morning ride routine. If I feel hungry when I wake up, I'll do a handful or two of mixed nuts before I jump on the bike. Your goal is to avoid carbs so you can get the ride started without any blood sugar spikes. I do not bring any fuel with me, and never feel like I'm losing power on the ride.
It's tricky at first to adjust to carb-fasted riding, but I can't switch back at this point.
My carb-fasted ride yesterday was 42 miles of MTB, started at 4:00am.... Rolled back to my doorstep at roughly 7:45am, and never once during the ride had a hunger feeling, or bonk.
Pretty damn convenient if you ask me.Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

I do all my riding fasted. I dont even like to have water sloshing around in my stomach. I bring water - but seldom sip unless it's over an hour on a HOT day & even then its just a squirt to get my mouth wet.
I've never had any issues even during summer races races where I am maintaining a HR of 180+ bpm.

Bikes are the best invention of all time. I can't get over how great it is to be out riding around in the sunrise desert just shredding. I have a 1 night road trip planned for Monday in Flagstaff AZ. I'm planning to do 2 days of pretty heavy MTB in a row while I'm there. I was trying to save my energy by not doing any big rides the few days before. This morning I wanted to MTB so badly I just said fuk it and did 24 miles. Still not crazy, I know ... But even to just chill off the bike for a few days is too much.
My ride streak still goes, but I have been doing easy days followed by alternating hard days to stay alive.
Yeah I swore off the 100oz camelback for a long time, but recently dug it out of the closet again and have been enjoying it. It's nice to just sip while you pedal, hydration problems will never get ahead of you that way.
The hydration bonk is a real thing in Arizona.Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

First ride back after dropping my motorcycle on my bad ankle.
It was a small group ride with friends, had a blast. 2x Sisters loop, then Wild Horse, to Scorpion East to Bush Lite back to parking.
Still riding in a walking boot. On a gearie bike... currently a mullet mixed-wheel. Currently building a new 29" wheel for it.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for cyclists who hog up an entire lane like that.
Find routes in quiet areas
Utilize bike lanes
Pre-map your route to avoid shoulder-less roads
Go EARLY in the morning
Finish the ride before morning rush hour
Take the sidewalk when your only other option is dying on the road
Dismount and walk on the grass on blind curves
Was the driver correct in monster trucking over those roadies?
No, of course not.
But the laws of physics don't care about the laws of the road.Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

checking out this new park this weekend, a repurposed dump mound. Local group SORBA got it sponsored by Trek to help build it.

I ride 100% on the road and regular drivers are scary enough without the random psychopath intentionally running people over.
Obviously the distracted drivers are a concern, but the most dangerous people in my experience are the drivers that see you and need to make a turn in front of you. The classic 'Right Hook.' They will speed up to get around you, then slam on the brakes to make the turn and underestimate how quickly you will meet at the intersection. I've had a few near misses, and my riding buddy got taken out by some old lady who admitted she saw him and went for it anyway.
