Honestly, speaking as the only lefty in this thread, gun laws are so far off my radar. First of all, common sense tells you that the people who obey laws are a bit different than the people who shoot places up.

I’m sick of the shootings, but I don’t think laws are going to solve the problem. It’s like the war on drugs...great, you made something against the law. You didn’t solve the problem. You just made something to throw money and funding at instead of focusing on things that will actually improve peoples lives.

You want people to stop shooting places up? Maybe fix the ever-widening chasm between the haves and the have-nots. Address the origin of the problem.

I don’t particularly care about guns one way or the other. Seriously don’t care. But I can’t stand the thought of spending a bunch of money to enforce new gun laws that aren’t going to stop a single shooting.

One main factor has been shown to be the absence of a positive father figure. I read a report about mass shooters as well as gang members...lack of a positive, close male role model was there in nearly every one of the cases studied. I'll try to remember to find and post it.

There's a glimmer of hope. If an AWB couldn't get passed after sandy hook, as tragic as that was, I dont think it will now. There's always executive orders, but I'll have faith in the SCOTUS when that day comes


Plus look at the 2014 midterms after the AWB failed to pass. Democrats got slaughtered with that being a large factor. And they know history will repeat itself if they push too hard.

So, as far as the positive male role model...I can see the case for that. It reminds me of crime in the 1980’s:

Through the 1980’s crime rates were rising and rising. People were calling it an epidemic and it was headline news just about every night (the 24hr news cycle really wasn’t as much of a thing then).
Around 1990, it mysteriously started falling. Nobody could figure out why. Economists studied this for years trying to figure out why it would rise so steadily and just fall.

Turns out that around 1973, a SCOTUS ruling made it so fewer unwanted children were born. 17 is right around the age that you’d expect an unwanted child to commit crimes. They actually figured this out because of Romania doing the opposite many years earlier and mandating couples have children. The whole story is written in Freakonomics...but I already gave away the end.

So...I can believe there is some pretty good support for what you’re saying.

Whether the issue is opportunity gap, or male role models, or even if it is mental health - no gun law is going to remediate it. That’s kind of my point. Gun laws are a cash grab for the criminal justice system because all you’ll ever do is incarcerate 10:1 people who were never going to commit a violent act to begin with.
