Sticklegs/rabbitsw00t,
Currently taking nursing theory for advanced practice nurses. Fuk this class. I can't believe people are able to write books on this chit. I'm looking forward to advanced health assessment and advanced pathopharm this summer. What should I be expecting? One of the SRNAs told me they were pretty tough, but I don't know what that entails.Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist c/o '21

It all varies by teacher and school. There is no way to answer this question. If someone who took it said it was hard, expect the same if it's the same teacher. For example, for patho the teacher may ask for you to identify all the cytokines and interleukins and their function or the hormonal biosynthesis of estrogens. There's a lot of worthless information that they can test you on that is simply a waste of brain power for what you'll be doing in your career but technically it's all fair game of the teacher is like that

Not in health IT but it's something that's booming when EMRs.
I hang out with some guys that are in health IT. They have love their jobs, as it's not stressful. A lot of them just took certification courses and a lot of them were business, biology majors.
It's actually my backup plan if my 1st choice career doesn't pan outSwiftRick is a fictional character

I had pretty legit assessment class: advanced 12 lead EKG, x-rays, PFTs, echos, etc. Theory class are the worst, fuk, I'm having flashbacks to that bull**** now.
It's a good time to start googling peer-reviewed articles on whatever topic you are covering in class.
you shadow any CRNAs yet? If not, have one of the SRNAs put you in touch with the chief and go hang out for a day or two.CRNA Crew

Sounds awesome. So jealous of you guys...
Congrats Rabbit. That's awesome!
First externship night shift tomorrow night. I'm going to tell my preceptor that my main goals for that shift are
1. Shadow him mainly and learn the PCU, as it is my first time working on a higher acuity unit compared to med-surg
2. Learn the unit and available resources
3. Watch him do a few assessments, and then maybe try to do one with his supervision
I'm hoping it won't be too bad since it's my first day. Other than peds, I haven't had an acute care rotation in over a year. My skills are put away somewhere in my mind along with all the information I've learned. Wish me luck.
Any tips on not making myself look like an idiot? I'm going to ask questions for sure when I don't know stuff... but I still want to make a good impression.
Also bringing a monster to drink around 12-1.

Cancelled...... 17 nurses cancelled/put on call from my unit for night shift. wtf, wtf, wtf.
How about don't **** where you eat, boys.
Where are you precepting? I would let the first night (or so) be guided by the preceptor. Ask questions, get a feel for his/ her routine and observe. If they offer you to try something, do so. Its one thing to guide your learning experience when you are in a bit deep and know what you need to still understand/learn, but for the start let the teacher teach. You didn't give your professor an outline of what she was to teach you for the semester, did you?
Also, Don't go in guns blazing ready to jump on ****. Nothing scares a seasoned nurse more than a confident (especially overly confident nursing) student/new grad. What's Spicy Training For?? LIFE MOTHER F-ER!

I'm staying away from everyone at work.
The first one was on me and was completely my fault. But she presented the opportunity, and it's like every guys dream to make lovelys with a cute nurse.
The second one invited me out to drinks, kept buying me drinks and one thing lead to another. I'm pretty sure I was taken advantage of, but i'll take it as a complimentSwiftRick is a fictional character

Repped you the location that I'm precepting.
This makes me feel a lot better. Before, I felt lost like I didn't have any idea what to expect, tell him, etc. But you're right, I'll let him guide me, not the other way around. Although I do know we have to give them a goal for each shift, so I'll make my goal to just shadow him the first day.
Definitely not an overconfident student. Probably quite the opposite. Confident when I need to be (performing skills in front of patients) but not so much outside of that.

So I ahd a longer response written out but then my computer restarted....le fu.
Essentially what I had typed was ths... your goal tonight is to learn where things are, the layout of the unit, who is who (clerks, RT, charge nurse, etc). And let your preceptor guide you through the learning experience. And don be too task-focused (a monkey can learn how to do a task...) but moreso organization and critically think through your assessments and your patients disease process and what is normal, abnormal, and the early signs of a problem. I feel like a lot of the new people we see coming through are task focused and not really thinking through the why. ex: pt desatuirating... increase oxygen rather than figuring out why is this person desaturating... positioning, ETT suctioning, tube placement, nasal suctioning when on cannula/cpap/room air, irritability, etc. What's Spicy Training For??
