Sup brahs been a while since I last posted
Ended up getting rid of my gs500 due to deep mechanical problems but it was a fun first bike for past six months
But on the bright side, hello new girl!
First time on a bigger bike, the 650, and it handles much smoother than my old gs500 srs
What was your guys' experience with the first "bigger bike" that you got?

Currently banned myself from riding bike until my thesis's first draft is done.
Strengthgained, how is that DRZ treating you?
Ian, when are we going to see your exhaust?
Richard, any update on the BMW?
Still waiting for blackout to tell me how well those LED lights work.
Who checks out r/motorcycles? Is it normal that they post their accidents so often?
Almost fell at a speed bump in front of the engineering faculty at my university.
2nd week of commuting on the bike I was scolded by a Prof for doing a u turn (spin the bike around a foot placed on the ground) on the walk way where I parked. Just gave him a nod and rode away.
Nice bike enjoy the riding on it.

I've got 200 miles left until I hit 9300 miles on the Duke and it has to be taken in for service. So naturally I decided to take a half day today and ride it 400 miles on this loop looool.

I packed my DSLR, some pb&js and water, a cable lock, some external USB batteries and my clear visor. I don't anticipate being back home until 10 p.m. Okpeaceoutbye /tumblr2015 KTM Super Duke R ABS || 2014 KTM 300XC-W || 2006 ZX6R || 2020 CRF125F || 2016 Rancher 420 || 2017 Z125

Question for you guys.
I'm still trying to decide on my first bike. As of right now, Ive narrowed it down to either the CBR500R (~427lbs) or an FZ6R (~470lbs).
My question is: How much will the weight difference affect these bikes? I know lighter bikes will be more flickable, but being in Indiana, I'm not planning to do a ton of canyon carving where that would be a huge factor. Is the 50lb difference really that noticeable, easier/harder to control, etc?

I know you say you won't be doing a lot of twisties but man is the FZ pig of a bike. You will feel the weight in slow speed manuvers for sure but outside of that it won't make much of a difference since you won't be doing a lot of aggressive riding. If the CBR was around when I was learning and I knew as much as I did now, I would have prob got that over the FZ.
Other than that, the bike has good grin factor for a newbie and parts are cheap and abudant for it since literally nothing mechanically has changed in the 6 years that it's been in production. It's extremely easy to take care of too.Last edited by DLM012; 05-06-2016 at 09:09 AM.

Didn't really think about the slow maneuvering. I will mostly be riding this bike around a college campus for the next few years so thats something to consider. Also good things to know about the FZ.
The two things keeping me from the CBR are price and sound. I love the looks of it and sound isn't necessarily a deal breaker, but I prefer the FZ6R sound over the CBR. Price is the bigger issue. Around me, the CBR's are going for like 4-5K and over with very very few for sale. The FZ6R's I'm seeing for sale are more numerous and many are in the 3-4K range.

And I really thought about a 300 but my issues with these were: highway riding, I know people say they can do it, but I'll be riding the highway daily to get to campus. Not sure if it would be good for daily highway runs. I'm also 6'1"-6'2" so I wasn't sure if I might feel too big on one of these. Lastly, I was just worried about outgrowing it too fast.
So that's where I'm torn
I thought the 500R might be a nice little bump in power/size while still being a good beginner bike.
The same thing goes for the FZ. It's got enough power to where I don't think I would outgrow it soon, and I've read a lot of positive things about it being a good beginner as well

You won't outgrow it but you'll get bored of it for sure. Not needing more power but the way it makes power and how it feels. The best way to describe my FZ was that it was "sterile". It doesn't really feel like it has a personality.
Modern 300s are capable highway machines and can be had cheap. I see crashed ones in my area all day for $2k (cosmetic only)*MFC*

All KD *******s. If you haven't raced a ninja 300, you're missing out. Did an endurance race (8 hours) with 3 of my bros 2 weekends ago. It was a blast. Chillin, talking chit, one dude crashed, and we had to quick-fix the bike, oh and the racing: the bike is HILARIOUSLY slow, but it makes the racing lots of fun. WOT all the turns.

Whens the last time you posted homie?
I kind of know this feel with the supermoto chasing down big bikes. Our more local track that closed down last year had two decently long straights so basically riding was playing a passing game until the last corner which puts you on the front straight and by the time I was able to get to corner 1 people would start catching up on the straight and then I'd pass everyone again throughout the track and then repeat.

300 is a great newbie street bike. But if you want something for highway, get a heavier bike for those windy days, because the 300 can be scary for newbs in thi situation, it's too light.
Good power for a newb rider, but eventually you will get bored and realize how slow it is.
Just get a turbo busa for your first bike lel

You're over complicating this by questioning weight and flickability, this is your first bike man you don't know chit about flickability and won't be limited by it. They are both great learner bikes, so are the 300 and 650 variants of the cbr and the ninja, they will all do the exact same things, on highways or back roads, you're not too big for any of them, and unless you're Valentino Rossi you won't outgrow any of them. Go ride them and decide for yourself.
Sterile is good for a learner. Less to learn, less to get caught out by.Registered owner of Dan_Staat's sister

None of them to be honest.
Just buy the smallest bike you can.
A 250 would easily do motorway speeds and you will learn to control your bike i stead of just letting it do its own thing.
Or you might end up like that guy in the youtube video that crashed into that truck lol.
Yeah sick he had an r6 . yeah sick he posted videos on youtube lol. Talked the talk. had the gear. But couldnt ride. Too insecure to start off on a smaller cc bike.
You got the rest of your life to buy bikes bro. Just being real with you

It wouldn't be much of a jump for me but this XSR is looking delicious. Triumph better bring it next year with the 800 triple. Yamaha is right on their heels with what they're doing. The non-R is outclassed by it and the XSR900 has so much going for it that it's pretty much in league with the R variant of the streety now that it has ABS, TC, and rider modes. What's not to like about a sub $10k bike coming with all of those features typically found on liter bikes?
The real question is where da fuk is the MT10? I haven't been riding long but I think I started in one of the best times in the history of modern motorcycling. I feel like I do when I go to IHOP. There's so much on the menu idk what to order.*MFC*
