sorry, been busy as **** covering the service. i posted elsewhere. i realized after matching that GS wasn't for me. don't want to be in school for the next 10 years. as a non-traditional student, i'll be in my 40s finishing up. i can't give out the specific details, as per the recommendation of my school, but i won't be penalized by NRMP for dropping my cat position. was i worried this would backfire - fuk yes? i used to message "swiftrick" periodically, but I got into a solid pre-residency that actually isn't Ophtho, and lets see how it all pans out.

Residents and above: Any advice for things to look for / pay attention to about a program when doing an away rotation? Things that M4's wouldn't usually think about but you wish you considered looking back?

Gonna rattle off a few things in no particular order

- EMR
- resident satisfaction and mood
- interaction between residents and everyone else
- food
- social life
- strengths and weaknesses of the teaching hospital in terms of cases, equipment, etc.
- has the program been on probation and why
- performance on board exams
- extra perks
- location; there's a strong chance once you graduate, you will get your first job near where you trained. Do you see yourself at this location for years to come.
- places residents reside and how bad the commute is
- CULTURE. You want to ideally be at a program that will fit you.

Like do they just go through a fellowship application process in the last year of residency?

After doing Cardiology for a month, it's safe to say I will 100% do this for a living. Absolutely love the mixture between procedures and medicine, let alone the interventional parts.... hnnng. Plus the actual physiology and pathophysiology of the heart is among the more interesting too imo. Only backlash seems to be the amount of on-call, even our attendings are pulling 55-60h per week.

I always figured I'd try to specialize in IM if I crash and burn while gunning for Derm. Cards is up there for me

Personally I like the narrow scope though... I can't see myself being a generalist. Would rather be a master of one than a jack of all trades

I don't mean general like internist I mean compared to things like Pulm-CCM (which is probably what I want to do) or even GI

I will say that Anesthesia seems pretty dope

push meds all day with good amount of off time and make major bank plus a lot of your hospital time goes towards flirting with nursing, pharmacists, other docs lmao

Being a general dermatologist turning and burning 15 ******* teens an hour 4.5 days a week for acne would be cool when I check my bank account but I would strongly prefer not to do that if I can help it

pretty sure i've convinced myself that i'm interested and want to do it at this point lol. some of my classmates are like "wtf how can you be interested in looking at acne and random skin patches all day"

- 5-6 years of skin cancer research cuz im a *******
- from hawaii and obviously skin cancer is a big deal with everyone getting lots of UV exposure now
- skin largest organ blah blah lots of diseases have skin symptoms blah blah can be immediate/instant gratification cuz very visible blah blah huge part of a person's identity and sense of pride/worth blah blah
- brb working 36 hours a week with Friday half days and 1.5 hour lunch breaks
- only hiring nurses and secretaries with 10/10 GLOW

plastic and ER guys seem to get the most tail, ortho dudes got the goods but 1/2 is either too stuckup or straight homo

real talk tho no1 gives a **** you are a doc, still all about about the FACE

I imagine alcohol as an interest, unless you're an actual sommelier (which I considered doing) or craft cocktail bartender extraordinaire, is still somewhat taboo.
Which is a shame bc I can definitely talk/drink whiskey with all the old timer docs.

Go for OB/GYN, tell bishes you'll give them free exams

Kept hearing about how our rotation site "feeds us". Turns out there will be like a poverty assortment of like 2 different things you could eat for free, or spend the normal $6-8 dollars for average cafeteria food. I've started to eat 1x per day at a restaurant while buying discounted gift cards online.
