I noticed alot of ex250 ninja talk here. My sister has a buell blast so I figured I would comment on that bike real quick just in case anyone is curious.
It's an interesting little bike for sure. I have never ridden an ex250 so i really can't compare it to that unfortunately. I have been told that the blast is faster that the ninjette which I believe. I have personally gotten the speedo to read 96mph and it actually got there pretty quick. I don't know the numbers but I reckon its got one tall 5th gear as it will thump along at 65mph at what seems like a comfortably low RPM. It's a better highway bike than I originally expected it to be. I wouldn't hesitate to run it at 65mph all day. It's comfortable as all hell and the fuel range is great. Cornering clearance sucks though. Also, the bike has a shot kick stand switch so once the kickstand is down the bike won't idle (yes in neutral). Easy fix but whatev. The automatic fuel enricher is pretty neat-o because you can just start it and walk away while it comes to temperature (unless your kickstand stand switch is busted). It vibrates like a motherfocker and the air box will make your right knee numb. Im sure the ex250 is a more refined bike but I think the buell makes up for that in character. It's a quirky little bike. There are some neat mods available for the blast but they aren't cheap. Rear sets, clip-ons, exhaust, high-comp big bore kits, cams, adjustable ignitions etc. I'm trying to unload my sv and once I do i think I'm just gonna steal here blast for the summer or at least until I find something i really want. Been lusting for a BSA B44...

I've got a really basic question in regards to down-shifting and coming to a complete stop;
Say you are coming in for a complete stop in 3rd gear; is it safe and plausible enough to disengage the clutch and 'block shift' from 3rd down to 1st all whilst simultaneously applying both front and rear brake pressure to stop - during all this, keeping the clutch lever completely disengaged (pulled back), even when idle, to prevent stalling?
I'm a beginner rider, and got my license test in a few weeks - just bought myself a bike (Ex250J Ninja - restricted to power/weight here in Oz).Jakes on you.

The bike wont want to go into 1st until its going like 3 mph or slower, it will sound bad and be hard to get it into 1st. What you should do though is shift from 3rd to neutral (down 1 to 2nd gear, then down 1/2 to neutral - neutral indicator light will come on) while braking. Then when your at a stop let the clutch out(as long as your sure its in neutral).

Assuming you keep the clutch disengaged the whole time, it's perfectly okay to down shift to first while braking. While it's okay to shift down to neutral while braking, as Heiber suggested, I like to stay in gear in case I need to quickly accelerate out the way of some cager who's not paying attention.

I've been looking into getting a bike for the last few years. as a big guy 6'6" 262lbs i'm having a hard time finding a bike that a beginner could use, since i have never ridden in my life. I plan on taking the motorcycle safety course this spring. i was looking at SV650's. If anyone wanted to give me a few suggestions a PM would be nice thank you

Thats a great starting bike my friend has one and I rode it once very comfortable but still fast and he had an exhaust on it that made the vtwin sound beastly. Yamaha makes a similar bike honestly though I'm 5'8" I don't know what its like to be that tall on a bike try going to dealerships and sitting on some just don't get suckered in to buying one without research I almost bought a 600 for 11k ended up getting a 750 for 8,200 a week later.

Look at the suzuki v-strom when you get the chance. 650cc, < 400lbs, and a better seat height for a guy of your size when compared to anything else out there, unless of course you start on a dirt bike. It's more of tourer type of bike, but mod with race bike clip ons and you get the best of both worlds.

Oh please, like you don't instantly dislike people who have a narrow and uneducated opinion on things like this. As if no one has ever said to you "why did you get x bike, y bike is so much better", when they have no idea. This is what you get from ninjette riders who haven't ridden other bikes. Same thing goes when in the gym, narrow minded *******s piss me off.
In before, "no youre opinion is uneducated".

went for my second ride with a mate all over the place and on the highway for the first time. jeez wind is nuts. and i finally dropped it, good to get the first one over and done with, was in a carpark and walk about to walk it backwards and i think i just had the bars turned too far and it leaned and i couldnt save it. no damage to either me or the bike so that was lucky.

Got a mechanical question in regards to my '08 250R Ninja (EX250J):
Well first things first; my bike hasn't been ridden for two weeks (since I've purchased it) as I don't have my license yet, but last a week I had started it a few times while idle in neutral to show a few mates - had no problems.
Well today I decided to take it out for a ride around my block, so I went to start it (started instantly and smoothly) and idled like normal but when I tried to give it some gas on the throttle (while in "neutral") it would just shutter and instantly stall.. Had no guts whatsoever.
I tried doing the same thing at least 5x and had the same result... I then decided to start the bike and put it into 1st gear and it worked fine and took off.
Took it for a 15 minute ride and had no problems at all - also tried starting it up again and giving some throttle in neutral and had no hiccups or stalls this time round?
lol anyone have any idea why it was initially stalling in neutral?Jakes on you.

It's funny cus that's exactly what happened to me yesterday. Yesterday was the first semi-warm day (45 degrees) and a TON of bikes were out. I waved to a cruiser (I believe it was a yamaha) and he waved back but someone on a suzuki SS didn't pay any mind. My feelings are still hurt

Is it carberated? I thnk you should leave the choke on full for about 1 minute till it revvs it self up then take it to like half choke for the 1st 1/2 mile of riding. My bike would do that if i didnt let it warm up enough (yes carberated)
best way is to be on the bike and just like strattle-walk it, safer from falling over either side that way id say.

This weather is really killing me as well. I'm lucky enough that I can pull my bike right into my basement so I don't have to worry about all the winterizing. We got some rain last night so hopefully this will wash the roads off a little bit so that when it all dries there isn't salt everywhere.

Yes, Kuryakyn makes a foot peg that swings out for extra leg room: http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go...ID/46/IMID/782
Another possible option is forward control extensions. I have 4" extensions that I bought off of eBay for my Vstar Custom.

It could have been loaded up from the numerous cold starts with only running it for a minute or two
You heard wrong. Maybe its the typcial R1 owner that gives it a sterotype. The '09 R1 with the crossplane crank actually is on the lower end of HP wars in comparasion to the other big name inline 4's.

ALL liter bikes are excessive! They are rocket ships on wheels. Its nothing short of insane. Most of your 600cc SS bikes these days are making what a liter was making a few years ago, yet they are lighter than those old liter bikes were. Its truly crazy.
As I get older I prefer cruisers now. Florida really has no curves either. Might as well get something comfy. A sportbikes handling is about as useless here as a Ferrari's acceleration is in LA traffic."Johan tells me that your luggage, is the luggage of the poor."
