I used to think like OP until I got a job as a waiter a month ago.
One of the most stressful, hardest things I've ever had to do. Brb saturday night, running around like crazy for 5 hours straight, eating no food. No time to even go to the bathroom or anything because you have to ask how their food is, water your tables, get the checks ready, ask if they want desert, box up their food, etc. 4+ tables at once.
edit - then the easy part with no stress is spending an hour or two mopping floors, vacuuming, sweeping at the end of the night, + other sideworkLast edited by vietbrah; 04-22-2013 at 10:59 AM.

Almost everything--all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Lol at people in the food industry complaining about tips, then I see dumb ass sloots irl bragging about how much they made in tips on x night and are going to blow it on drinks
Lol at people who say its hard work and feel entitled to tips. You don't do shiet, go work construction or roofing in the summer and tell me how tough your job is. We're creates of habit and get used to the environment, you just got used to a bitch ass environment and are a slack jawed *******s... so you think what you do is so rough. Makes me sick.

nikka's that says try serving for a day....nikka please. i been a server before. i know it can be stressful on a busy night. but if u cant take the heat then dont work as a server. simple as that. i dont mind tipping. but telling me how much to tip in highlights is ridiculous. and i cant believe u get taxed for eating out.

Everyone bashes waiter, no talent, easy as fuk anyone can do it job... until they try to become one. Im not talking about 5* hotel or fkin movie theater servers either, where all the customers already have the leeway to pay out their ass just to be nice, conpared to a restaurant where you work for a fkin tip at like 3 an hour because america wants people to have the option to not pay for service if they didnt receive any

Tipping has gotten out of control.. I use to tip 25-30% then I went to Europe and experenced what real service was, and realized they deserve nothing where I live.. If I get exceptional service I will tip. But I've dated waitresses and they have a mindset that they deserve tips and shouldn't earn it. And they remember who tips and who doesn't.. Seriously date a waitress and it will change your view on tipping ... Oh and minimum wage is $10:50 where I live...
I waited 30mins at Panago pizza, ordered there and waited for my food when it was time to pay it had an automatic tip on the debit machine.. This Inraged me so I proceeded to take out cash and pay the exact change. You telling me you deserve a tip for doing your job. Doing absolutly no service?? **** this industry

These are the job guidelines of being a waiter. That is what waiters do.
Being a doctor: No sleep for more than 24 hours, doing surgery and not be able to make ANY mistake at all, keep track of all the patients needs, , brb a guy running inside with blood coming out of his head have to save his life while afterward having to check up on other patients and do surgery on them.
The easy part with no stress: Checking up on patients, writing out certain medications needed, having meetings to discuss multiple cases for hours.
Every job has a guideline, as a waiter you are entitled to do those things bolded because you're a waiter at that restaurant.

OP - the bill isn't telling you to tip.
the bill is making it easier for ****ing retards in this country to know what 15% or 20% is. In general people WANT to give 15% or 20% but they dont know how to multiply .15 or .20 * bill.
This is just for convenience.
also - standard tip is 15%. tip for good service is 20 and **** is 0-10

Let's be practical about this. If we did away with tipping there are a few things that are guaranteed to happen.
Pros:
You wouldn't be expected to tip
Cons:
1) Prices would increase (you would have to pay the workers more)
2) Servers would make less overall (higher salary would not make up for lost tips)
3) Service would be worse (no incentive to give good service)
You would ultimately end up paying the same amount for worse service, they would just make up the difference by raising prices. How does that benefit anyone?Eats booty like groceries crew
