i agree w/ the others here. Shame and guilt can be a motivator, but no point dwelling there. Good job being gentle on yourself. The only thing I see missing from your plan is hitting a meeting or two. Own your f*@k up and move on.

It seems that a lot of you guys use your faith in god to help you get through this? Does this mean an atheist like myself has no chance of winning this battle? I have been reading this forum for a year or so and it seems most of you guys use your faith in the higher power to get you through.
Do you have any pointers on what direction an atheist should take.
Thanks.

there is plenty in AA for the non-believer.
imo, the God angle is all about acceptance and humility. the individual needs to do all he can to bring about his sobriety. each and every day. then, when life throws little wrenches in the machinery, it's about understanding that i cannot control everything, and to not get all worked up about it.
it is one thing to put the drink down. that is the easy part.
it is quite another to be contented while doing so. that requires a different mindset.

Hey Forge, get up, dust yourself off, and start again. We all have that happen from time to time. We wonder just what was it really like. I had a friend who is an addict relapse the same way and for the same reason after four years. About 48 hours into it, he remembered why he quit. We are all here praying for you guy.

In NA, all we have to believe in is a power greater than ourselves. I'm a non-believer but I believe in the program and energy of all the recoverying addicts together to help me do this. My morning prayer is nothing more than a repetition of our third step prayer ... take my will and my life, guide me in my recovery, and show me how to live, clean.

Read chapter 4 of the Big Book. Its the chapter to the agnostics.
A.A. is NOT a save your soul program. It is a save your butt program.
It is designed for all walks of life.
It doesnt matter if you come from Park Avenue or Park bench. It works.
Give it a try and if your not satisfied your misery is easily refunded.

^^^Right the hell on there! Gotta love that hard-core, old school program. Go to meetings, get a sponsor, work the steps. The rest will fall into place. I could have found a million reasons not to just shut up and listen. Anyone can find something in a meeting or in the Big Book to take issue with and use as an excuse to stay stuck. I had to want sobriety more than anything else for it to work. Really, what do you have to lose here? Keep it simple.

Bro, the limit yoursel doesn't work and I'm living proof of that. I've tried that and everytime, woke up in the ditch. Do you have a bud in the program that would go with you and ride herd with you? In my early days, I couldn't be around it because for some reason, it would make me crazy. I might not drink but it would make me crazy.

Day three. The mind is a strange thing. The desire to drink is there even though it always leads to pain. I think the first bit after a relapse must be tough. It is funny how the mind singles out whatever was enjoyable about it and excludes the dark side to it.

My mind tended to embrace the dark side, or justify it. That's the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing, and expecting different results. We know what the outcome will be. We just think maybe this time it will be different.
Good luck Forge. Learn from your errors, and get right. To whom much is given, much is expected.

Well you know what they say, if you go to a barber shop enough times, your gonna get a haircut.

Some days the thought of drinking will seem repugnant and other times attractive. If I don't practice self-care and have activities and or hobbies that I am doing and enjoying the whole deck of cards can collapse.
