lol, that's what I felt like doing, but man, I just wanted to get something in.
Thanks dude. I am anxious to get to the 140s for DB pressing, although I think I am still not quite there.
Not much else I can say either dude!
Thanks for confirming your thoughts on it. Yeah, I am thinking about it more and more. If I do indeed switch to a 3-day-a-week training schedule, I will likely increase the volume on each of those training days. Ideally, I want to lift 4 days a week, so this change will be a temporary one.
Very nice Jorday! Thanks man .

Friday-4/28/07: (Deload)
General Warm-Up: 5 minutes, Elliptical Machine
Front Squats (Warm-Up) Sets: BARx15, 135x12, 185x3, 225x2, 275x1, 315x1
ME Set-Front Squats: 365xFAIL
Incline BB Bench Press: 225x5, 275x3, 300x2
Seated Military Press: 135x3, 185x3
Comments: Man, this sucked. I was hoping to perform new 1RM PRs for Front Squats, Sumo Deadlifts, and Platform SLDL, but I didn't even get to that point. I hurt my left lower back again on my failed ME Set. I was confident with this lift because 315x1 was such an easy warm up rep and I've done 355x1 before. Unracking the barbell and balancing was not an issue. I went down as low as I could--apparently too low because I hit the uprights on the "Squat Rack", and I lost balance. I didn't get stuck in the hole either. I went all the way down, tried to use the stretch-reflex, got about 3 inches back up from the hole, somehow hit something on the left side of the barbell, and then lost it. This wasn't the bad part; the bad part was how I re-racked the barbell, or in this case, how I didn't re-rack the barbell. I guess when I first unracked the barbell, I took too many steps back because when I tried to drop the barbell on the uprights, I missed the left upright! The right side of the barbell rested fine on the uprights, but the left side was out too far. I didn't know this and I ended up kinda getting crushed under the left side of the barbell. The plates consequently fell off the barbell one at a time. This is where the uneven distribution and twisting of my torso occured and that led to me having a pretty bad muscle pull in my left side.
FYI, the gym I went to do this doesn't have a power rack where I can adjust the safety pins on the side. The picture below shows a very similar squat station that I used. Notice that the uprights on the side do not adjust--I guess I went lower than allowed, and that threw my balance off.
At this point, I knew I couldn't do anything heavy. So I decided to mess around and do a few sets on Incline Bench and Military Press and call it a day.
I am typing this the following morning and it still hurts like a "beep", lol. I don't know if I will be 100% for Monday, when I am starting my program over.Last edited by iron619; 04-29-2007 at 02:43 AM.

Damn bro, sounds scary. I have done something sort of similar, but not like that. It is really embarassing and adding injury to insult just sucks. Sorry to hear this man, just give it time to heal up.

Ugh - that just sucks, Iron. One of my gyms has those racks and I hate them too. They are just not the same as you proved today. I met a guy who broke his hand clean through dropping the bar in one of them. Damn, hopefully your back didn't get too messed up...ice and heat, repeat

That sucks dude. Sounds like a regular power rack would have prevented all this crap from happening if they had one there.
Hope your back feels better man.Training Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=926304

Props to you man for even trying such an insane front squat. 365 pounds is a tonne of weight.
Maybe just go parrellel next time considering your ATG is too low for the rack."i dont know man i try to maintain low bw and gain stregth because what good is stregth if your using half of it to move your body. high stregth plus low body weight equals intense explosion. i think a guy like irish kid or gray horse would mess bs up in a fight due to kickness and probably better punch stregth explosion. i still wouldnt wanna fight bser though hed wreck me due to the size advantage and my legs arent up to par to make me a stregth conter" Sickonstorm

Thanks Baker.
Man, it happens, I guess, lol. Surprisingly, my back feels much better already--almost 100%. Thanks Anuj.
Yeah, it was pretty scary, especially since the outcome could have been worse. What happened on that day has never happened to me before. Thanks Aaron.
Man, I really wanted this front squat PR, too. I know I can do it. It was a little embarassing, but it's all good. My friend was filming it on the video camera too, because I anticipated the PR and wanted to post it. Watching the video was painful enough, lol.
Hey Cat, yeah, I guess I can't get them all, lol. I really don't like these racks because you have to unrack the barbell, then walk it out so you don't hit the prongs on the front. I guess I walked back to far. Wow, he broke his hand over that; that sucks! Luckily and strangely, my lower back has healed a lot in the past two days! I am stoked about this because I anticipated the pain to linger for at least 5 days. I might even be able to do my deadlifts on Tuesday .
Wife? lol, I'm not married !!
Yeah man, I'm certain these kinds of accidents wouldn't happen if I had a power rack. Normally, when I train lower body, I go to another gym (a gym with a power rack), but I didn't know I would hit the uprights when doing front squats.
Thanks dude, my back is feeling almost 100%!
Thanks Chris. My confidence on a 365 lb Front Squat hasn't gone down, and I might try this again soon. My ultimate goal for this year is to get a 405 lb Front Squat, but I don't know if I'll get there...
Thanks a lot YS, I appreciate it! Well, next time I do this, I will make sure I go to a gym that has a power rack. I don't want to chance the risk for future accidents like I just had.USMC: 1999-2003; 2009-Current

Glad you're okay, homie; could've been much worse. The 24 I go to has the same thing. The closest one with a power rack is off Balboa .

Hey dude, it's all good though. I'll try it again sometime soon.
Thanks dude. The inclines felt pretty heavy, but then again, my lower back was kinda holding me back, besides, I was just messing around in there, lol.
Yo Mike! Howya doing dude? I'm glad that my back isn't messed up as I thought it would be. But now my right knee is messed up, lol (I'll post why in the following posts...)
My classes are going pretty well man. I can't wait for this semester to be over. Having night school Monday thru Thursday after working every day and trying to train 4-5 days a week while studying for my second cert is wearing me out, lol!!
We should try to take a summer class man, watcha think? Regarding employment, I was considering working for Bally's, but I just found out that they don't provide benefits for part time trainers, plus, you don't get any base pay for the hours that you aren't training somebody. As much as I despise the company, 24 hour fitness might be a good stepping stone to start off at. They provide pretty good benefits, and of course, provide commission pay. I just didn't want to fall under the image of a sucky 24 Hour Fitness trainer, lol.
Hope all is well dude. I remember you telling me you were leaving town this past weekend-hope you had fun!
Oh yeah, I got the Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant book--it seems pretty easy, so I plan on taking the next available test, and I think that's on the 18th of May.
Do you still want to pursue the ACSM Cert with me? One of us can order the materials, and the other will just give the other half of the cost. Let me know brosky!USMC: 1999-2003; 2009-Current

Saturday-4/28/07: Cardio
Cardio: Elliptical Trainer
Time: 45 minutes
Resistance: 5
Comments: A great cardio session. I was reading my ACE's Lifestyle and Weight Management textbook while doing this cardio session, and time really flew by! I got some good reading too, so now, every time I do cardio, I will try to remember to bring my textbook and read.
Just so you guys know, the Lifestyle and Weight Management is an accredited ACE Certification. This is another certification that I am going for. I plan on taking the next computerized test (I think it's on the 18th of May). After I get this certification, I want to study for the ACSM certification.USMC: 1999-2003; 2009-Current

Sunday-4/29/07: Cardio
Cardio: Outdoor Basketball
Games Played: One 5-on-5 game; Three 3-on-3 games
Comments: A great cardio session! I haven't played basketball in such a long time (I can't even remember the last post on this was), but it was great to get out there with the guys and get some good cardio in.
Just for the record, we lost the 5-on-5 game (I barely even touched the ball--no teamwork), and my team took 2 out of 3 on the 3-on-3 half games.
Man, I was huffin and puffin hard! Afterwards, I went over to my friend's house, took a shower, smoked a few bowls, made some good home-made food, and watched "Next Friday" -- Good times .
EDIT: I forgot to mention, on a bad note, I clumsily bumped my right knee into a corner of a table at my friend's house. I don't know what happened, but I can't even bend my right knee (knee flexion) all the way. It has a constant uncomfortable feeling. This isn't good. I haven't had any knee injuries or pain since my days in the Marine Corps, and I guess I hit the wrong spot. Fortunately, I won't be doing any squatting movements this week, so hopefully it will heal by next week.Last edited by iron619; 04-30-2007 at 08:56 PM.

Monday-4/30/07: Cardio
Cardio: Elliptical Trainer (No Hand/Arm Attachment)
Time: 40 minutes
Resistance: 5
Comments: Another cardio session. Wow, I did 3 days in a row! I would have skipped this session today, but I simply ate way too many Hershey's chocolate kisses during my munchie phase last night, so I felt I had to burn them off, lol.
I brought my book in the gym again and read during this session, and again, 40 minutes felt like 15 minutes--it's awesome!
EDIT: In my previous post to this one, I made an edit mentioning me bumping my knee into the table. Well, it didn't feel any better this morning. I actually wanted to do the Incline Treadmill Walking, but my right knee was in such pain! I had to opt for the Elliptical. On the Elliptical, I felt no knee discomfort. This isn't a good thing, but I think I just bruised something.Last edited by iron619; 04-30-2007 at 08:57 PM.

Hey Chris,
Looks like you got in some great cardio this week. Good work !
I actually know a few great trainers who started out at 24; the bad ones are the ones that stick around for years . If you have strong sale skills, you can do very well there. If you'd prefer not to do sales, though, you should give LA Fitness a look, as they have a separate sales staff that will provide you with clients.
There's also a place in La Mesa called "Look Better Naked Training." The owner's name is Stacia Weisbach, and you can reach her at stacia@lookbetternakedtraining.com. I don't know much about it, but I would assume the pay is better than at 24. They're hiring right now, so might be worth checking out.
I'm going to get the ACSM materials sometime this week, and then I can just give them to you after your L&WM exam. Or, if you'd prefer to study both simultaneously, we can try to make some time to study together over the next couple of weeks.
What classes were you looking at taking over the summer? I haven't done a summer session at Mesa before, so I don't really know what they offer.
Hasta luego, amigo.
