IMO, regardless of what he said about it, I believe it's to hide the facial expressions in order to keep the attention on the physique and not distract, in any way, his posing routine..and it also gives him a mysterious look, which is probably something aesthetically driven, something that just looks "cool".

In most of his guest posings, once he removes the mask, the people start cheering, that's where, IMO, he's done posing and is just hyping the crowd.
