Depends where you live, don't become a carpenter though, i did and i hate how every hack with a tool belt qualifies as a carpenter, too many guys make a joke of the title and bring down the wage.

If i could do it all over again I'd probably go Electrician, then Heavy Duty Mechanic, then ISM.

Linesman is good if you can get into a good union, they always seem to just stand around lol. HVAC is pretty good too since the future is in new energy sources so you'll always have work, and it's not too messy, its a well respected trade.

Really, anything that's not messy and isn't taxing on the body is a good trade, they all make around the same amount of money. Don't take something like welding, between the fumes and working in weird positions for hours on end, you'll wish you were working a different trade.

Auto mechanic here. I love it, although I have a feeling as to why a lot of mechanics hate their job, and I think it mainly has to do with location and the flat rate system. Where abouts are you from, OP?

I get paid well and find it so much fun to work on cars, although being a tall guy doesn't help a lot, especially when working underneath the dash.

Linework is a good choice OP. Been doing it for 5 years and I can't really complain. The work is dangerous, you have to work in the freezing cold, and hot ass summer, but most of the time you're not killing youself either.

It pays really well, and if you're ambibious, they offer plenty of overtime.

I'm not ambitious, I turn down the mega-majority of the OT. I say yes one day a week.

Electrical definitely has the most paths you can branch off into. You can't go wrong!

I was a mechanic for several years and hated it. Most of the time I worked 6 days a week and still only made a little over 30K a year. The easy jobs just aren't there anymore, at least not at a dealership. All the jobs you could make money off of like services and timing belts are few and far between. Everything is warranty work which pays chit. You work in the heat in summer and cold in the winter. I'm glad I did it because I can fix my cars and friends and family, but I couldn't do it for the rest of my life.

I've more than busted my knuckles lol, but thankfully nothing TOO serious, just a lot of deep cuts, gashes, etc.

You need to get the **** out of the flat rate system. No apprentice should ever be in a flat rate system. If you were paid hourly i'm sure you'd be much happier, but yes, it's definitely no job for the lazy.

Auto tech here that runs his own shop now. The job sucks and to be successful you have to do niche work. I work practically 7 days a week, have smog and brake and lamp certification and multiple ASEs. The money isn't there unless you're willing to break your back daily or do niche **** like tuning on a specific car where you can book jobs 2 months ahead of time. I dont want to divulge my exact pay before taxes but its high 5 figure. Hoping to also sell more cars next year on the side and break the 6 figure mark.


My advice is to stay away from this field if you want to have a social life and not feel tired all the time. Go into something like HVAC or Electrician. My buddy works for the city as an electrician and makes what I do after 2 years at his job.

Nah but I get the whole waiting game gig. I used to work in Refrigeration and I swear 75% of the time I was driving. brb drive 3 hours to walmart and spend half an hour fixing their air conditioner then drive 3 hours back. Made for long days but good pay.
