    Shin splints from squats?

    Hey all,

have been having some some slight pain in my left calf region that's very much akin to shin splints (the pain comes more from the bone), and it happens AFTER i stand back up from a squat position (weighted or non-weighted) when the muscle is relaxed.

Not really knowing what was causing it, I zero'd in on the fact that I may be putting too much of my weight forward onto my toes on some of my squat sets.

I just wanted to know if anyone has ever had this issue and what you've done to remedy it (power through it, etc.)

My current 5rm is listed as 230, but I know I can definitely get more (running 5x5). The pain is not enough to put me out of commission, but more like a nagging aching after coming up from any squat position =/.

I bet you could benefit from some mobility drills for your ankle flexibility.

I'd rather die on my feet then live on my knees.

I wear chucks when I lift.

And I definitely keep my feet 100% flat on the ground (never on my toes), I will admit though on certain messier reps, I can feel my weight shifting to my toes, but the bottom of my feet never leave the floor.

I think it may be happening to me right now....kinda on the outside under the shin or between the shin and bone?

Feels sorta scary like the bone is being stressed?

Cna defintely feel it if I squat down and place alot of weigt forward...

    Not good...im sure.

EXACTLY what i'm going through body.

though today, I was much more wary of my squat position and didn't try to go as deep as i usually do; though I'm pretty much past parallel/ATG, i tried extremely hard to keep the weight above my heels/middle of foot and not let it linger onto my toes.

Either way, the pain level today was an irritable 1-2 instead of the usual 5-6 that i've been experiencing.

I would agree that a lack of ankle flexibility is an issue (not uncommon for squats) and also if the weight is brought too far forwards, causing the muscles of the shin to work hard to maintain balance.

it used to happen to me when i would use the hack squat machine with my feet far forward on the platform. i stopped using it for about 2 years after i figured out it was the cause of my shin splints. recently i started using it again but now my feet are lower on the platform closer to my body. also my flexibility has improved a lot over this time period.
