Harvard Med school avg is a 3.8, yes the top ranked med school.

Med schools are very holistic in their admissions process but GPA and MCAT are both very important. 3.7 is impressive.

MCAT is more important than GPA. The reason for this is that anyone can get a high GPA if they major in something easy or go to an easy school. I mean, a 3.7 from MIT is going to look better than a 4.0 from neverheardofitstate U. And a 3.7 in Bio is gonna look better than a 4.0 in sociology + premed prereqs.

Switched from physics. If you look at the MSAR, a lot of schools are not reporting matriculant GPAs of 3.9 with 44T MCAT scores

He's wrong about the timeline, btw. Residency = minimum of 3, maximum of 7. And fellowship = 1-3 years. So theoretically you could be done when you're 30. But yeah, life is not a race. I'm not gonna be out of training till I'm 35.

He said better than average MCAT so I'm assuming it was above a 29. Most competitive schools would admit someone with a 35 and a ~3.6 GPA as long as you have lab and volunteer EC's. That being said, being black helps also (I know for a fact). In my case I had amazing MCAT (13/11/14) with crappy undergrad gpa (3.4) due to freshman woes...never once got asked a question about my GPA during interviews.

Grats. Med school is long and boring. You'll probably ask yourself dozens of times, "Why do we have to learn this?" Unless you're going into IM or the like, 95% of the material you'll be forced to learn you'll probably never actually need to know again. Medical education is extremely inefficient in this way. More schools need to switch to 3 year, or better yet, self-paced programs.

Have a routine that works for studying and don't let your ego get in the way of honestly evaluating how things are going. Try to get in the mix of something that distinguishes you from a lot of others. Don't be afraid to say no to friends
