Found out Monday that I will be in Damneck for 4 months between end of Nov to end of March. Any suggestions on things to do out there? I've heard it pretty much sucks. I will have my car for sure.

Lots of historic/tourist areas... Colonial Williamsburg is just around the corner. Washington DC is an easy weekend trip.

hey guys, sorry to intrude on your thread, but i've got a question:

i have a job offer from the Navy on the table that i'm considering (as a civilian engineer). It's called the Naval Acquisition Intern/Development Program:

    http://acquisition.navy.mil/home/acq...t_program_nadp
    http://jobs.spawar.navy.mil/NAIP.aspx

are any of you guys familiar with this program? If so, is it a good position in your opinion?

You have a job offer? Has in you applied on USAJOBS, you were referred to a selecting official, and have been offered a full time position?

If so, you've made it that far and are now asking if it's a good position?

It's a good program in my opinion. I was under the impression you needed business courses to make it into the program. If you do have an offer, you'd be stupid to not take it.

When did you apply? I'm trying to get a feel for how long it takes to get an interview.

yea, I got a full time job offer last week. the salary came in low compared to other jobs , but i care more about interesting work, which this seems to be.

i applied via USAJOBS in june and got a call for an interview a couple weeks ago in mid september. after reading a few forums online, it usually takes a few months after applying to get an interview, so this seems to be a normal time period. HOWEVER, the job opening period was only a couple days before the posting closed, so be sure to check usajobs often

i applied myself without a referral, BUT i did my senior design project with the Navy, and i wouldnt have gotten an interview without that experience.

As for the business coursework, I think it depends on what position in the program your applying for (engineer, contract specialist, logistics, etc). For engineering, i think you just need to have at least a 2.95 gpa, i dont think business coursework is required?

what good things have you heard about the program? the job description and website are kinds vague. thanks

Well, for federal jobs the advancement is usually set in stone. I only know about the contract and business side of the program. But, a federal job is a good thing to have. Congrats on getting hired for it.

I don't think there's a program specifically for college, but review this NAVADMIN for the current early-out. Be sure to read EVERY detail and requirement - most guys stop at the part they want to see, and overlook the next line that disqualifies them...

it isnt that bad of an area. it is too flooded with Navy but that is to be expected

seriously this area is alright depending on what you are into. if you like the bar/club scene there are some decent ones(not great but decent) if you are into outdoors type of shiet then there is plenty of that too. like any other area it depends on what your interests are
You would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.

    Professional opinions

Went to the recruiter's office two days ago after extensive research on all branches in regards to pretty much everything military. Everyone hears the stories of lies from the recruiters. From what I can tell, the recruiter cannot guarantee you placement, rate, and advancement, etc. He cannot guarantee much of anything really. His role is to provide information and inform recruits of the possibilities, but success is dependent on the recruit!

The normal recruiter heard the conversation about wrestling that I had with the new recruiter and went on to tell me about the SEALS prior to the practice asvab. He didn't tell me too much because we were both pressed with time. I scored in the 84 percentile. I coached college wrestling the last four years and am a decorated collegiate wrestler myself. Any biased or unbiased recommendations? From what I deciphered from the recruiter, your rate is different from the SEALS and SEAL applicants might come from recommendations? What rates would you recommend if planning to follow it up with SEAL, SWCC, AIRR, or EOD?

I would like to hear the skinny on naval special forces from someone who has experienced them. Mostly, which should I join and why do you recommend it? Specified scope of duties, mortality rates, team and individual roles (read somewhere that SEALS are individually capable but work better as a team?), pay differences, manning levels, wash out rates, living quarters, training specs, length of active duty... Anything along those lines. Also, does your entire contract count towards retirement, or is it only active duty?

I have also heard of a navy wrestling team. Would that be compatible with SEAL, SWCC, AIRR, EOD training? Wrestling aside, can someone enlighten me to the ins and outs of the Navy SFs?

    All help is much appreciated!

There migh be a SWCC or two who frequent this thread, don't know of any SEAL's.

Most on here can only give you what they heard or a friend this/that. My experiences with this started and ended in 1983, any info I have on the pipeline is seriously outdated.

If you want it straight, get the recruiter to get you in touch with a SEAL motivator, I believe they still have them.

Did his recruiter tell him there is no rate for seal or other spec war rates Or did he just not understand what his recruiter?

Don't join the Navy to wrestle. Especially if you want to be in a highly specialized field that requires lengthy and expensive training (ask yourself: why would the Navy spend all that time and money to train you for one thing, only to go do another?)

If you're interested in SpecWar, as noted above, find a SEAL Motivator in your area. Interview with them, go through a few of their workouts. BUDs has an 80% drop rate for a reason - and it's not because everyone coming in the front door fully understands and is ready for what they're facing.

I'm not even sure what happens today when someone is dropped. It used to be you were offered a choice of one or more other ratings (jobs) they needed to fill that day - some good, some bad, no guarantee you'd be interested in any. Or, you could just be out into the civilian world, since the Navy has more than enough applicants, so be sure that question is clearly answered by the recruiter and SEAL motivator before you obligate to anything.

That is what recruiter meant by no rate. The rates for SEAL, SWCC, EOD etc, are new to some. Used to have to be in one 22 source ratings.

Just had a kid I coached in HS drop. He was reclassed and is in IS school.

Just set up my move through the move.mil website...took me a few minutes to figure out how to get it started off, but pretty easy to use otherwise. Does anyone know if alcohol is allowed to be moved? It seems to offer conflicting information. It says it can so long as its legally possessed and used at the destination (which it would be, since I'm 22), but also says that they cannot ship hazardous materials, i.e. alcoholic beverages since they are considered combustibles. I'm leaning towards they cannot be moved, but I have no experience in this, hence the reasoning behind the question.

Any Navy Construction Divers in here?

Trying to gather more information about this... Was reading about UTC1 & 2 and it basically seems like if you make it to that level you are going to have a very good career doing commerical construction diving. This is something I would like to do as a career.... travel/work in distant places for short periods of time. Not at a desk!

How many navy construction divers are there? I'm looking to get training that has very good carry over to the civilian world. I am not sure if I want to make the navy a career so I'm hesitant to do other dive programs like EOD or SEAL that have less carry over but seem like a lot more fun.

If I can basically get the best enlisted contract possible to guarantee Navy construction diving training... how much training does that guarantee me? Once I max out the training I was guaranteed in my contract... what qualifies me for more training and advancement, tests/previous performance, or a combo of those? How hard is it to get to the upper echelon of Navy construction diving (UTC-1 & 2)?

How much will my age count against me (27 -- got a college degree and four years full time work experience though)?

I have been looking at AIRR but this seems like a more attractive option as a career and I think I could have a pretty cool life down the road when/if I get out of the Navy and work in the civilian sector. Being in the Navy for 10 years and living half that time in Oxnard at UTC-2 and then traveling the world doing odd jobs or building great pieces of infrastructure and making good money sounds pretty great...

Construction divers are Seabees. They're usually second term guys who have been seabeee for awhile. You can't just join to be one. You can join to be a Diver and are at the whim of the orders you get to determine if you get to a salvage team.

Edit: Things might have changed and I guess you can join to be a seabee diver now. Just read the whole instruction. You still have to go the fleet and get qual'd before they send you. A lot of things can happen in those two years.

Dive school is very tough. So you should be prepared for that.

Also I do well in thinking roles , I.E. I am much better off being in a unit where feedback is encouraged rather than the way I perceive most of the military to be where the enlistees blindly follow the officers orders. This is one of the main reasons I wanna enlist Special Operations as opposed to trying for OCS. SEALs I am sure there is a lot of freedom of thought and action when completing objectives, basically they're trusted enough to make their own good decisions and get the job done... is Navy Construction Diving Similar?
