Hi, I'm thinking of getting some acrylic nails or gel extensions done and was wondering if anyone here has them and whether they get in the way when lifting?
Thanks!

Depends on the length, but when I had them, it adversely affected some of my lifts. (deadlifts in particular) I got tired of the every two week appt/upkeep, so I had them removed. My nails are short and my grip's improved. And I'm playing the piano again now that they're short again, so...it's a win.
I always liked the french look, tho, when I had them done; very perty.

I haven't had fake nails in 5 years but when I did, I felt the same as WEGs.
I had just started working out and found that they got in the way a lot - specifically with grip. I thought about keeping them shorter but it seemed like a waste of money to pay for nails that short.DAYUM!!!

I used to keep them somewhat short, with dark colors. I never liked the really long look, tbh. But, I was a lazy fake nail person. lol I would skip appts, and they'd grow out, and be way too long b4 I knew it, and I just couldn't grip anything, firmly.
Honestly? I don't miss 'em anymore.
Funny, what I used to blow my $ on.

I didn't have crazy long nails but if I had them filed shorter, I probably could have kept them.
I also skipped appointments. Frequently.
I don't miss them at all either. I have far better things to spend my money on. Plus they just KILL your nails if you do get them removed. That's probably the part I hated most.
Plus, plus my vitamins give me gorgeous REAL nails.DAYUM!!!

i agree on the spending money part. i became good friends with my nail tech, and part of the appt was just fun to see her, really. i said i don't have to pay you to see you, do i? i was always skipping appts...always something came up on my weekends, and it just became a pain.
my daughter used to bug me to play the piano...and with long nails, i had an excuse. now, i don't.
anyways...sorry to go off the OT, OP. My advice...if you keep em shorter, and stick with your scheduled appts, you should be ok. but, when they grow out due to skipped appts, your grip will be affected.

I think gel is better than acrylic, it looks better, lasts longer, but it's usually more expensive than acrylic.
I used to get my nails done religgggiously. I never broke a nail while lifting but I HAVE had them pushed in which hurts really f***ing bad! I noticed I started being too careful about how I picked things up because I didn't want to ruin my nails so I got rid of them. Feels better being able to grab plates without worrying "omg no what if I chip my nails, I just got them done!".
But if you can manage, do it. Fake nails look so nice.

I've had acrylics on and off for years and there's no question that they mess up the condition of your natural nail regardless of how the good the salon is. With some TLC and time your nails will recover.

Why acrylic or gel...why not grow your natural nails? My natural nails are a little bit thin and bendy but I can still grow them a few millimeters past my fingertips if I'm careful. things that help a lot:
- A glass or crystal nail file - it seals the edge and helps prevent spitting and breaking. Don't use clippers or an emery board
- A good base coat
- An acetone-free polish remover
- A multivitamin that includes biotin
- Oil
- Cotton gloves (put on oil on your hands and put the cotton gloves on top of that for at least a few minutes every day...I do this overnight and it really makes my nails harder)
- Nitrile gloves that you can wear when you're washing dishes or cleaning etc...the less you get your nails wet and soapy the better... I even wear nitrile gloves in the shower if no one is there to watch

I always get the "sporty" length... if you tend to knock the hell out of your hands or jam your fingers (like I do) I suggest you refrain from getting them... I mean.. I'm a glutton for punishment so I gt them like eveery 6mos.... you know.... to test if I'm still a clumsy ass hole...............

I have white and pink gel, but on top of my own nails. I keep them fairly short and a round square to not get caught on the edges as I do if I have the square cut. But this way I can have a nice French mani for 2 weeks. Lifting 5d per week would wreck havock on my nails otherwise. I like to have nice nails.
Mine are never in the way.1) I will be there iN 5 minutes.
2) If not there by then, see 1.
