I'm not sure I'd make it a "competition" between employees, though. Perhaps you could have them set goals and their challenge would be to achieve the goal within a certain period of time. If there's going to be some sort of incentive for participation outside of their own personal results, it might not be a bad idea if everyone got something. Just my two cents.
Perhaps something like stating a goal - "I want to lower my blood pressure" or whatever, then give the challenge 8 weeks, mark their progress, and then publish all of the results to distribute to everyone?
My job did this. We have about 300 people, and each that wanted to enter the competition would choose a nickname, something to keep them anonymous. It was over a three month period, and they used % of fat lost. They gave an update every week, using the nicknames to determine the standings.
Each participant did get a ****meter, and the winner got something else. There was a lot of participation, and a lot of people really lost weight.
When I used to train people this was very common to see. The office actually bought everyone 3 month membership + personal training (bigggg f'in score for me) anyway, what I saw was the fat people get mad at the skinnies and stop after about a week
My job uses physical fitness for promotions...then again I am in the military. I honestly couldnt see anything wrong with it, although I do have to agree with Money Mike...some people might get discouraged because they dont think it is working for them...anyone can make a change...its just a frame of mind.
