Jalapeno's are are pretty easy to do... For someone who is a chili pepper growing virgin they are the place to start...
Something alittle milder, and more mediteranean, is Greek (Or Italian) pepperoncini.
This year I'm growing pepperoncini, Jalapeno, and then a Venezulan strain of Aji Dulce... Which Aji Dulce is basically a habenero pepper that has had the heat bred out of it, so all you get is the deep smokey sweet natural flavor of the pepper.6'4"
