    I've got 361 cassettes .....

I feel I should throw them away ...but another side tells me ,let them collect dust and when I die , someone else will throw them away

It's a bummer either way ,who's got a collection still

I have a small collection, whatever I can pick up from a records store. My car is old enough to still have a cassette player and its fun to pop in Willie Nelson or Alice Cooper and pretend like its the 90s

I got lots of CD's, DVD's, Blu-Rays and especially tons of retro games

you could argue the first 3 are still in use today but realistically they're gonna be completely obsolete in a couple of years when everything is "streaming", "cloud" or whatever witchcraft

You could transfer cassettes or songs into the digital realm but that would take some effort and sound quality wouldn't be optimim.

I had my share but shvt canned 'em all.
Any songs I did want to keep were easily replaceable with current technology.
I moved all my original songs from that antiquated format into the digital realm 20+ years ago.

Unless someone in your orbit still digs cassettes I'd lose 'em.

Some songs make the system sound fantastic and some make it sound like dogsh

On top of that the remasters seem to be pushed ,which 9 times out of 10 aren't as good

Guess it's just the way it is ,tech changes and you still like the. Old stuff

I had a coworker give me all of his 8 tracks when I bought my 78 TransAm . Left them in the trunk for the new owner lol.
I had no where to store all my vinyl, and gave probably 40 pounds of it to a friend back in the 80’s .
Funny how it made a comeback. The only issues with tape is the terrible SNR , I’d dump them tbh , just like vhs

    That doesn't surprise me.
I tend to think it's because of different compression or algorithm schemes and compatibility with old recording formats.

But, that's just an uneducated guess.

the problem with digital and streaming is you're not in control of what's on there. licenses expire. and if you don't have an internet connection, that can be an issue as well.

a physical copy is what you want and can be used when you want. not up to the company and they cant take it from you. and you dont have to pay a rental fee every month!/year

i would at least keep the cassettes you like the best/listen to the most.

Funny how it made a comeback. The only issues with tape is the terrible SNR , I’d dump them tbh , just like vhs

    mix tapes?
    commercial tapes?
    field recordings?

mix tapes are cool if you want to be reminded of what you used to listen to. Commercial tapes just sell them or toss them. Field recordings you should digitize. I recently had my studio cassette deck cleaned up, and aligned. I have 300-400 field recordings (I found the notes to them) from lessons, camps, festivals that I'm in the process of digitizing. Tape will deteriorate over time so you do need to get them transferred to other media.

Next project will be 150 or so Hi8mm tapes to digitize (setting that up) and then 8-10K pictures (negatives and slides) of mine and 5K of my father's to digitize. Hopefully I'll live long enough to get those done. Still have 6000 albums in crates. Some good stuff, lot's of jazz as well as rock

so commercially recorded tape. Just toss them unless you want to keep them for some reason. They're getting old enough now that the magnetic film is starting to sluff off from the backing which will dirty up the cassette deck you play them through. I'm not sure if there are any collectable cassettes that would be worth your time preserving

They will eventually get cool again like vinyl and you can cash in.

I don't have any cassettes, cd's, dvd's, console games left, I threw them all out or gave them away years ago.

I wish I kept the old consoles and games though.
