What makes the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk so good are the side quests.

Honorable mention, Deus Ex Mankind divided.

Can't really think of any games that come close in regards to sidequests. I will say Fallout does a pretty good job. But the can't think of any new games today. Ghost of Tsushima, Spiderman, and Horizon weren't that great, honestly kinda boring

I also don't understand why it's so difficult for other devs to do the same

I remembering coming out from The Hunt and Both Sides, Now side quests feeling like I should take a break and lie down for a bit because those really hit hard

The gigs in CP77 which are smaller side quests are also really good. the Talent Academy gig is still being debated today on which option is best when it comes to dealing with Fiona Vargas.

Same with Witcher 3, not just the side quests, but the Witcher contracts also have good storytelling.

I think most game devs just won't spend that much time and resources writing stories outside their game's main story.

I mean, there's a few other games I'd add to that list.

For the most part though, it's the writing of the quests, the scenario presented and the rewards at the end and how they add to the overall lore/believability of the world. Those are what make great sidequests.

There's also a little bit of familiarity in them. For example in Cyberpunk, some of the sidequests you undertake for characters can be multiple ones over the course of the game, so you end up feeling some sort of attachment or familiarity to them which helps sells the entire thing ---- Whereas in Horizon, I feel like some of these sidequests are way too overwritten, especially in forbidden west you'd meet this random fkker and he'll go on a massive backstory of himself and the problem he faces and then you do the sidequest and never see him again..... Like da fuq whats the point? sure they flesh out the story and add depth and all that crap, but end of the day ... I just dont give a fuk about you bro, couple that with the extremely boring writing and it makes it even worse.

In Horizon, every single sidequest is so fleshed out with these characters, with their boring writing and their long ass stories .. You honestly just dont legit care about them because you'll never meet them again. In games like the Witcher, Cyberpunk etc, even the smallest sidequests still have memorable aspects to them. A super short sidequest still has a memorable character or an interesting scenario you're put in.

GOT is probably the worst game I've played when it came to sidequests, even though you take multiple sidequests for people ... the writing was so fukkin boring and dour that I didn't bother with like 90% of the sidequests, even the fleshed out ones because they were written horrible and ultimately I didn't give a fuk about them. Worst of all they presented the worst scenarios.

CD Project Red need to learn to playtest their games for bugs before releasing. It's my major complaint against them, but really the only one. They otherwise know how to make a solid game.

No side quest had a cookie cutter or "put together by manatees bobbing balls into tubes" feel. Everything felt like it had the same degree of care as the main missions. There's no cynical or afterthought design in it. Even when your task is something pretty basic like go kill these dudes, or fetch a lost hammer or kill some mice, there's an interesting story behind it.

I dunno if anyone else got this but I thought it took a really philosophical approach to the nature of being a monster. There's that speech Geralt gives to the monster group in Skellige which is surprisingly moving and philosophical, and there's a story about one of the wraiths you need to fight which is actually quite heart breaking, like she was murdered by someone she loved and now lives in agony and torment. You feel bad for having to kill the screaming monstrosity but you actually release it from its prison, since you need to find what binds the wraith to the world to free it.
    Back off, Warchild.

    Seriously.

Wot. In Forbidden West alone there's a bunch of Side quests from characters you meet again. Examples are chief Hekarru, Jaxx, Drakka/Yarra, the grandma who's grandson went missing, Talanah, Morlund, Stemmur, Nil, Boomer and her sister. That's just off the top of my head of major NPCs you help out and meet multiple times, some having quests that span the whole game. Plus there's side quests from all your main companions too that do the same.

It would make more sense to me that you didn't enjoy Horizon so these things were forgettable to you but to make that claim about no major engaging side quests is wild.

Side quests in RDR2 are really good and enjoyable too and are ways to get to know the members of your gang better. the scale, scope, or length of them and the storytelling are kinda small compared to witcher 3 and cyberpunk side quests though.
