So many stories about people complaining they can’t afford a house, can’t afford school, can’t afford food, etc etc
How long before large corporations just start building entire towns with houses, company stores etc, and instead of a wage you just live there and work there and get a house, food, transport to your job, kids have schools etc
Probably the company would pay for some kind of vocational training for the workers
Like what a government would normally do but presumably only for able-bodied people who opt in to the work

Give us your entire existence so we can profit immensely on it and we will make sure it has a safe place to be stored when we are not using it.
But worded like “hey we give you a house”I only read thread titles and my own posts.

heard someone mention san fran has apartment buildings where government workers like cops/emt/teachers etc can live for reduced rates to be near their jobs.
in the south in my grandfather's day they had "mill villages" where people working for the textile mills could build small houses. were nice neighborhoods back then...then blacks started coming in...now trying to move more the other way through gentrification

Done right, this sounds great.
One of the things I love about military deployments is other than your job, everything is done for you. You show up at the location, all the food, sleeping arrangements, gym, bathroom is right there in walking distance. You don't have to cook, clean, wash dishes, unclog toilets.
Pretty much you just do your job and work out. And stack your entire paycheck for 3-12 months.
A lot of the junior enlisted do something similar when they live in the barracks/dorms/ship.

Basically a man camp or offshore rig. Offshore rig has the advantage of a shorter commute. Every land site I've been to (with the exception of one in Saudi) has been an hour away from the camp/hotel. I'm offshore right now and my commute is 2 flights of stairs.
A lot of the company towns were built because there was no housing within a reasonable distance, whether it was a coal mine or the Manhattan Project."Bones heal, pain is temporary, and chicks dig scars" - Evel Knievel

See it a lot in small towns. Not far from me, Goodyear tire built a plant and most of the housing around that plant were built for employees.
It was a way to get around income taxes for the employees and the company would write it off as an expense. You would get a company home, car, even provided food and other needs. Sure, your actual check might not be that hot, but overall compensation was good. It's kind of why government employees, although they gripe about their pay, they do really well. Same with welfare slags, they can do 2X better than you making 2X their income because all of their expenses are paid. Of course the IRS came in and stopped that for us private citizens.
