Perform an experiment, have the results automatically recorded, take those recorded results, lock them in a safe without looking at them, then go and mess about with the experiment. After you have messed with the experiment, go and and look at the results that were in the safe.

Repeat this a bunch of times and you will observe that the results, that were locked in the safe, change depending on what you do to the experiment after you locked them in the safe.

This isn't theoretical; you can actually go and do it and see it happen.

If you really want to mess with your mind, you have to look at the nature of the observer. The computer observed it, the bacteria in the room observed it and you can put a mouse in the room to observe it, but it doesn't have the same effect as a human observing it.

There is an argument to be made that consciousness is the ability to collapse the wavefunction.

I think decoherence has been accepted as the better explanation of collapse of the wavefunction but the question of an observer is still open-ended. It isn't necessarily something conscious, and the debate is stymied by a lack of clarity of the different grades of cognition, of which consciousness is a late-emerging and highly sophisticated version of.

The thought experiment is different from Wigner's pet interpretation. It is worth thinking about. I mean it is important to realize we do not know the underlying "truth". You are free to pick whatever interpretation you want. The theory is only a prescription for computing probabilities. One could argue the theories are so observer centric because science is formulated to be a description of reality from the pov of some observer.

There are many problems with the observer, and yeah, decoherence offers some resolution, but it is by no means settled.
