Within the last year, I've seen around 15 people get let go from my team. I'm lucky I'm here, and feel fortunate that management likes me and respects me. But after being in the career for 6 years or so I'm feeling some significant burn out, and have lost some good peers and am expected to take on more responsibilities to help address the backlog caused from the layoffs. I even had some vacation days lately, thinking it'd fix my mood, but nope. In some ways I kinda wish I'd get let go so I could get a severance package, experience a "Summer Vacation" of sorts like we had in K-12, and then maybe get some kind of sudden spurt of inspiration to reclaim my self identity after a few months of leisure.
The stock market has been bullish this year and has produced more profits in 2 months than my company would pay me in 4-5 months. SRS. And that's saying something because my pay is actually really good for my industry, srs. This is surely impacting my opinion on this subject too, though it isn't fair since we know the market will tank again sooner or later causing losses, and isn't a dependable source of income especially if you lack diversification.
I don't know what would be an ideal alternative. Not the biggest fan of universal income. Not the biggest fan of communism/socialism as a whole. I like the idea of a free market and being clever/lucky/hardworking to bring in success and incentivize quality products and services. I guess I just wish salaries were 3x'd globally (in relation to prices/CoL) and that the new standard was instead that people typically retired by around age 40-45.
This turned out to be more of a rant than I planned but, jeez. I've never really questioned before "how much more of this chit can I take?" until recently.

Feel the same way OP, i was honestly about to post a thread on if there is anyone with a good amount of savings that are considering NEETing. There is one other person out of 6 originally that are still working on the same team as me from when i started a year ago. They hired one person to replace them so naturally, i got stuck with most of the work. Pay is 6 figures but ive been applying to other positions and am considering even taking a paycut to get the right role. Good luck

I've had a lot of savings for about 10 years now, and honestly have pretty much been a neet since then. Still work my ass off, but it's as a self employed person and could stop working anytime if I wanted. There have been times where stress level has been 10/10 from various Real Estate development projects, but at the same time those projects were designed by me and it was basically my own vision coming together. Different feeling when stress comes from within.

the closest thing you will ever have to freedom realistically is finding a high paying job where you can work remotely and not do much work
in 2018 I started to work remotely with one-two optional days in the office and was probably putting in 20 hrs/week
in 2020 and 2021 I lowered that to maybe 10 hrs/week
in 2022 I literally did zero work
2023 to now I do maybe 5-10 hrs/week
it's the closest thing to retirement really, and EVEN THEN I'm still unhappy.
I think the real solution to be content is to find something that you enjoy and don't have to worry too much about being let go because you have a valuable skillset.Monster0ultra self proclaimed "Chad" face pic looks like vtech school shooter: https://i.imgur.com/z2m6Why.jpg

What happens when you don't get the job?
You'll sit on ur @ss the next couple months waiting for another 75k job to open up.
If it were me, i'd cut all my useless expenses -> deliver for uber eats -> funnel all the money into a business
Couple months of desperate offense will change the trajectory of your life srs
