Lol, no.
Score isn't the end all for a GOTY pick. A 2D scroller is gonna be reviewed in the metrics of other 2D scrollers. Doesn't give you modern graphics, crazy setpieces, strong narrative, taking risks etc. It's just gonna be an exceptional game for people who love those kind of games. Something like TOTK imo will have much more broader appeal to be a real GOTY contender.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

cleared the first world
hasn't convinced me YET, curious to see what is still to come but so far it's been pretty standard except for the elephant power-up which isn't really all that great tbh lol
it's no DKC though, really hoping for a 6th entry for the series 30th birthday next year+++ miscin' at work crew +++

It's pretty fun. Cool to see them expand the lore to a new place with the Flower Kingdom. Opened up the door to new enemy types, new "Toads" in the flower people, new power ups, the Wonder Seed bit which is reminiscent of Mario World's secret keys.
They're also reprising a lot of solid music from SM64 and other previous games. Game kind of has a Yoshi's Island feel to it, too. Can't explain why, though.
Seems like they also took a few notes from Kirby and the Forgotten Kingdom, which ain't getting complaints from me, since that game rocked.
So far another solid Mario side-scroller. Blasting through but I've been playing Mario games for 30+ years at this point, so if I can't blast through them would say more about me than Nintendo. Franchise lovers will find a lot to enjoy. People burnt out on the Mario formula could probably pass.
One thing I do miss from the SNES era is the grungy aesthetic. The bitcrushed music, the pixelated graphics...gave games like SMW, All-Stars, and Donkey Kong Country such unique visual and audio palettes. But the smooth cartoon CGI look kinda makes Mario and Donkey Kong (Returns, Tropical Freeze) look like any generic cartoon.
