Trump says something in response, I can’t understand what it might mean.

If he sticks to the issues, doesn't get drawn into the sh it flinging and actually uses everything he has to show how Biden has been an abject failure, I think he stands a strong chance of winning. I mean it's going to be predictable what they are going to use to try and go after him so as long as he doesn't get drawn in then I think he could win. I'm not supporting one side or the other, this is just an opinion.

Yeah, I think that sentiment is pretty common -- Trump is one of the few candidates that would have a solid chance of losing to Biden. He has way too much baggage and there is a huge percentage of people who will never vote for him no matter what. Any other candidate however, would have a good chance against Biden.

I agree Biden won’t get 81 million votes again if it’s not Trump’s name on the opposing ticket. But Trump also has a certain charm that DeSantis does not. Many of the rabid Trump supporters, are votes that Trump gets that DeSantis will likely not. I haven't seen anyone explain how DeSantis is going to get all those Trump fans that didn't vote for Bush or Romney but did vote for Trump to vote for DeSantis in the general.
And even if DeSantis wins the primary, which I don’t think he will, do you think Trump goes away quietly? Accepting election results isn’t really on brand for him. There is a chance the convention would be contested, there would be protests and fraud accusations and lawsuits. Donald could run 3rd party and as some states have sore loser laws that could lead to another set of lawsuits. It would be a mess."it's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone"

DeSantis has a better chance of winning general, but Trump better chance of winning primary. Age-old dillemma in politics.
GOP's standards are reverse of the general population. Swing voters, if they even exist, view baggage as a bad thing. Yet the Republican Party wears the controversy with a badge of honor, and views controversy as a sign that if you're making enemies, you must be upsetting the establishment.

DeSantis is basically Trump, just a smaller version, like a Key Chain size

Agreed but why do we continue to do the primaries like we do? Trump and Hillary were (supposedly) the two least likeable candidates in history. The person that I wanted to vote for was basically packing his bags when the primary finally came to my state
Why not have everyone vote for their party's candidate on the same night?Pull-Up PR: https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=177233951

I don't think that is much of an issue for a few reasons. In the general election, those "rabid Trump supporters" aren't going to vote for Biden, and would certainly opt for DeSantis if he were the alternative. You might argue that they would just stay home on election day but I suspect that many of the Biden voters who were motivated to vote against Trump will also stay home, so it is likely a wash.
Your first concern is overblown but the second one has merit. Given the pandemic and the atypical election procedure with huge numbers of mail-in votes, the results did seem odd on first glance. I've never seen a situation where one candidate has a sizeable lead in multiple swing states only to have all of them flip by the morning...so I can see how this atypical pattern caused by the mail-in voting arose suspicion. This combined with Trump's (somewhat justifiable) paranoia regarding the media explains his reaction IMO. None of those factors would be at play for the primaries. There is no pandemic and the media certainly isn't carrying water for DeSantis, so even if he did object, there would be no meat for any supporters to bite into here.
Regarding your second point, I absolutely can see Trump getting pissed off and running as a third part candidate. That of course would be a disaster and would pretty much assure that we have an Alzheimer's patient running the country for the next 4 years. I hope he doesn't do that.It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I do think that many stay home without an endorsement from Trump, and I think Roe helps the democrats get more to the polls. At this point, I think the path to success for Republicans in 2024 is for Trump to get locked up ( home confinement as the logistics of a former president in prison is to much) and have DeSantis spin it as martyrdom to claim his base. That's about the only way DeSantis is winning Trump's base. Republicans are trying really hard to meme DeSantis into being an intelligent, effective version of Trump, and while he's certainly more willing to enact the party's platform, he has never actually had the quality it takes to appeal to Trump's base.

These laws are an interesting legal question for presidential elections, since both primary and general elections for President are indirect elections, so there's always the chance of fighting in court to secure a spot on the ballot.
But yeah, if Trump is able to run third party, Biden wins. Same thing puts a Republican in office if Manchin runs third party.Last edited by 7Seconds; 05-25-2023 at 05:02 PM.

A vote for Trump is not for the man himself but rather a huge middle finger to the establishment and the same old retreads they bring in year after year. Tired of the Clintons, Bush, Biden, whomevers turn it is this time type of agenda. They don't nominate who is actually most qualified but more based on who's turn it is. The dem are even rigging the debates so if Kennedy or whomever else doesn't hit some magical threshold that they determine well then no debate for you & that way they can hide sleepy in the basement again.

The GOP didn’t take Trump seriously. They wanted to use him to get tax cuts and judges and he was otherwise planned to be a puppet.
They didn’t realize he would constantly set fires for four years. After the tax cut there was too much distraction to pass real legislation. Trump has next to zero actual negotiating skill so even on things he was serious about he couldn’t broker any deals. Even with his own party.

We can't let a small minority of fanatical conspiracy theorist neofascists beholden to their narcissist Dear Leader over country hold the rest of us hostage. The GOP has to find a candidate who can siphon off more of the Ds & Is disaffected with the current far left socialist clown world direction than he will lose in hard core Trump cultists. There are millions of them out there, but they showed up in full force to vote for Not Trump last time, even if it was a corrupt dementia patient on death's doorstep. My preference would be someone like Tim Scott or Larry Hogan or Chris Sununu, but I don't think they are radical enough to get through a GOP primary. Really, the ideal president would be Justin Amash, but he officially left the GOP out of disgust over Trump.

I’m not sure who could beat Trump. Asa Hutchinson is running about 10 years too late. The party has moved on from people like him. He's too nice. Too normal. Basically John Kasich with a tenth of the Name ID.
What the GOP needs if it hopes to derail Trump is a well-known challenger with real conservative creds who isn't afraid to fight Trump in the same way Trump has fought others.
DeSantis is a pushover and Trump is gonna eat him alive on the debate stage. Christie and Sununu aren't conservative enough. Tim Scott and Nikki Haley’s problem is their tone/style. They are two traditional "civil" establishment politicians in a GOP that wants a schoolyard bully.
The best anti-Trump candidate would probably be to put Mitt Romney and Chris Christie together in a blender.
Really, the ideal president would be Justin Amash, but he officially left the GOP out of disgust over Trump.
He's said on his podcast that he does not plan to run in 2024, but he does plan to get back in eventually. There’s just no way in hell if you put Trump, Biden (or Harris), and Amash on a debate stage that it wouldn’t become blatantly apparent who the most qualified individual for the position would be. That’s why the two party system would never let that happen."it's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone"

All you have to do is read his twitter feed to know what a bloodbath an actual debate would be. I'm all in if he ever runs. Unfortunately, the Libertarian Party has been taken over by extremist edgelords, too. I'm hoping he does some kind of unity ticket as an independent with Tulsi or something like that.

That’s the problem. People hear 'Libertarian' and they think Anarchy and unfettered, "free market" capitalism because the loudest voices in any movement are usually the most extreme. I appreciate the ethos of libertarianism, but people need to realize that it isn't all-or-nothing, and it's okay to compromise to make progress. Messaging is important. But it’s tough to get people to take libertarianism seriously when people like Vermin Supreme and McAfee were the faces of the party.
People need to stop treating the LP as a fun house and the LP needs to take it's campaigns seriously. Run more local candidates, aim for the state houses not the White House, actually get serious legitimate candidates."it's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone"
