What is an example of British humor? Like the kind only British people find funny?

Sounds like something that just uttering will have a British audience in stitches, is it just me or do they laugh at EVERYTHING they think is part of comedy?

Humour moves on imo. Stuff that was classic brit comedy back when my parents watched it just doesn't hold up now often because much of what's funny is due to thing being unexpected.

Sarcastic and self deprecating. This is the big difference with us and 'mericans - we can laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously, anyone that does gets mocked.

At times it is difficult to pin down but sometimes I come across humour and think "omg this is could not happen anywhere but here".

This did give me a little "heh" chuckle cause of the end, but it's not THAT funny to be laughing the whole way through like the audience.

Mmm I think it's funny so I'm not sure if it meets the criteria, but Fawlty Towers was pretty good. Other than that Britain really hasn't done much in the last 100 years besides cuck out.

What about the original The Office? That was some pretty dry Brit humor.

Little Britain probably has a few cases. Like the "bitty" or the one where David plays a flute. I reckon Vicar of Dibley might go over US heads, they expect women to make jokes about periods and dicks.

British comedy fan here. PBS here used to have British comedies/BBC TV a couple of nights a week. Not listed yet:

- Are You Being Served?

- Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister

- Red Dwarf

- Coupling

There is probably more I'm not remembering. Agree with dry, sarcastic, and self-deprecating. Probably had some of the biggest laughs from Coupling from these. Fawlty Tower is a classic too.

Probably had some of the biggest laughs from Coupling from these.

This is a good example because I can imagine Coupling fans finding Seinfeld unfunny while Seinfeld fans finding Coupling unfunny. When they're essentially the same idea but delivered differently. Jeff is even Kramer, Kramer Jeff.

Only difference is Kramer didn't leave the show and make it jump the shark.

It's a lot of gallows humor that could easily be seen as a tragedy with just a few small changes to the script.

The inbetweeners is another great example, it's very accurate to anyone who was the sort of middle of the road high school kid.

As a brit though I do appreciate American humor as well, I'm not always in the mood for heavier UK stuff.

I used to watch Bottom as a kid with my dad - found it absolutely hilarious at the time, but don't find it funny any longer. I'm not sure if humour changes over time, or if I found it funny because I was less mature back then.

Glad to see a few people mention Inbetweeners. I don't think there's a British man who couldn't relate to that from his school days in some form or another. The films were okay too, but not a patch on the TV series.
