If you recall, we kept hearing the same thing from the conservative side over and over again - China is rigging the election for the Democrats (prior to Biden even being the nominee). Many just let this fall as people weren't being distracted from Russian meddling, however it didn't stop Trump and Pence from pushing the narrative. This idea was sowed into your minds years ago.
Comparing China to Russia is very.... different but similar. China's disregard for human rights makes the country a pretty repulsive state by most standards. However, China has always acted more so as a competitor rather than an a threat - and they do so very cleverly through trade, development assistance, and investment. Russia on the other hand acts as a threat through more blatant actions of annexing territories, assassinating opponents overseas, undermining alliances, etc.
China is the bigger economic challenge for sure - not even comparable, however Russia is the more immediate military threat. However, our intelligence agencies tell us that Russia and China are closer now than they have been in decades, so when it comes to national security, whether it be military, but especially cyber security, etc., it is not so easy to say they are necessarily so different. Both are a serious threat that should not be taken so lightly.
