I did rub down the plates to get some of the shine off then painted the York letters with a paint pen that is probably a little too old. I noticed that these two plates are not twins. Notice the raised 45 on the left. The lettering is slightly different. I think the letters are the same size, but the letters on the plate with the raised 45 are softer. The letter edges are more rounded than the sharper edges of the non 45 marked plate.

Screen shot from the York history document:

Never thought I would find one pair of deep dish. Recently felt grateful for the one pair, because I did not think I would find a second. They are out there as are bars. Keep looking and you will find them.

    York Plates

A friend that's a local HS coach let me look through their weight room and get any York's that might be there. So, after a 15 minute drive , I came home with
    9 -45
    14-25
    14-10
    9-5
    2-2 1/2

All the 45's & 25's are milled, only one 10 is. None of the other smaller plates have any milling. I'll need to go back and look a little harder for the other 45 & 5.

A lot of high schools have a wide variation of equipment , with a lot of it dating back a long time. This is the first time I've picked up anything for nothing ( of coarse there could be some future favor needed from me), some I've traded for and some I've bought if the price was decent. Well worth checking into.

Are we talking about MUTASSIN in Maryland, north of Baltimore and south of Havre d'Grace?
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Yes, I got the plates from MUTASSIN. (I ran into these guys by chance buying from craigs). He told me to tell you “hello”. And I got the bar from ffrink. Had the pleasure of checking out a couple vintage gyms and getting an education live and in person. What a couple of days!

When you were in MUTASSIN's basement, you didn't wake up suddenly with the smell of ether in the air, did you? Just askin'...

And did you see the green carpet that is featured in so many of his craigslist and eBay ads?

Is that what that was? I thought my head was spinning from all the vintage weights.
Actually no, I didn’t notice the carpet. But I did notice the vintage tube socks from the 80s era. I felt right at home.

Because STR8OUT can't remember where this page is or something....

360 LB York Tall Letter Set surfaces with possible pre-shipwheel collars

Originally Posted by STR8OUT View Post
One of my good friends and wizards of finding treasures (Gene from NJ) found this set in Strongsville, OH this week. A really nice lady inherited her Uncles weight set after her uncle passed away. Her Uncle inherited the weight set from her Grandfather when he passed away. Her grandfather "The Polish Prince" purchased this 360 LB set brand new from York back in the 30's and it miraculously managed to stay together. The set she advertised did not include collars but after going back and forth with her she found these collars in her Uncles basement and sent me pictures. I was clueless and didnt think they belonged to this set but after researching this past week I'm almost certain these collars were York and DID infact come with this 360lb set. I have never seen these collars posted before but would be awesome if someone out there has a pair and has info about them. In digging through old online photos and magazines from the 30's they keep popping up more and more. They are only leather lined on 1 side (riveted) and have really large thumb screws.

The owner of this barbell set was Stan Sienkiewicz a weightlifter from Poland who moved to Ohio. This nice lady included many photos of her grandfather along with newspaper articles stating the weightlifting records he broke and the medals he won.

The York Barbell is interesting, it has the "turned down" type knurling, fat inner and outer collars (each with 2 set screws), but it also has a center knurling?

The York Bench is cool but its amazing how unsteady and how uneasy I felt when that loaded barbell with plates was on it. I was ready for the welds to break at any second lol. Had to do it for a quick photo though.

I have the 1920's Berg DD plates, I have the 75 lb York DD plates, I have 26 pairs of York DD 45 plates, yet I was never able to get my hands on York Tall Letter plates until now. I couldn't be happier and I hope you guys enjoy the pictures.

Would all you york guys prefer a vintage set of plates rust free bare cast iron no paint or rust free with fresh powder coat on the bare cast iron? What is more valuable to you as a collector?
