I agree with you for the most part. However, I believe being a trainer requires a constant dedication to the industry and not just a certification that you renew every 2 years. Volunteer for events, have a website, write for magazines, do video content, train anything that moves, and build a reputation as a life changer. Take chances, and build a brand.

If you are a personal trainer, unless you are working floor shifts or employed at a very unique club, you are only getting paid commission on sessions trained. You are not paid hourly.
If you think 1 personal training session = 1 hour of work, think again. (Although corporations often like to suggest otherwise.)
Also keep in mind; most personal trainers out there barely make it to 90 sessions per month, let alone in the 100's. Managers will show you somewhat gorgeous salaries at that top tier, but that is if, and only if, you train an astronomical number of sessions. Few personal trainers ever reach those top bonus tiers i.e. 120-160 Sessions in 4 weeks.
Consider these factors when considering your place of employment.

    Side Note:

Based on the national statistics I have gathered from multiple sources, the average personal trainer in the United States trains 767 sessions per year.

For the following examples, I will divide that number over the course of 50 weeks (2 weeks for vacation) to get my average number, which is roughly 15 sessions per week.

If a particular club, i.e. Equinox Fitness, has minimums, I will use the minimum number of sessions required to keep employment instead of the national average.

    Floor Shift:

    Minimum Wage per Hour

    Tier I Personal Trainer:

    $23.00 per Session (before taxes)

$28.00 per Session, if 90+ Sessions are completed in 4 weeks (before taxes)

    Example:

    15 Sessions/week x 4 weeks = 60 Sessions x $23.00 = $1,380.00 per month (before taxes)

    + 20 mandatory floor hours/week x 4 weeks = 80 mandatory floor hours x $8.00/hr = $640.00 per month (before taxes)

Total = $2,020.00 per month (before taxes)

    Tier II Personal Trainer:

    $31.50 per Session (before taxes)

$36.50 per Session, if 90+ Sessions are completed in 4 weeks (before taxes)

    Example:

    21 Sessions/week x 4 weeks = 84 Sessions x $31.50 = $2,646.00 per month (before taxes)

    + 10 mandatory floor hours/week x 4 weeks = 40 mandatory floor hours x $8.00/hr = $320.00 per month (before taxes)

Total = $2,966 per month (before taxes)

    Tier III Personal Trainer:

    $39.00 per Session (before taxes)

$44.00 per Session, if 90+ Sessions are completed in 4 weeks (before taxes)

    Example: 21 Sessions/week x 4 weeks = 84 Sessions x $39.00 = $3,276.00 per month (before taxes)

Bonuses Awarded to All Tier Levels:

    90 Sessions (4 weeks) = $175.00 bonus (before taxes)

    119 Sessions (4 weeks) = $434.00 bonus (before taxes)

    139 Sessions (4 weeks) = $717.00 bonus (before taxes)

    152 Sessions (4 weeks) = $844.00 bonus (before taxes)

    Summary Examples:

If you make it to Tier III Trainer…

    Average Tier III Trainer:

90 Sessions (4 weeks), $44.00 per Session, plus $175.00 bonus = $4,135.00 per month (before taxes)

    After 30% taxes…

    = $2,894.50 per month

    = $1,447.25 per 2 weeks (Pay Period)

    = $723.63 per week

    Absolute Best Tier III Trainer:

152 Sessions (4 weeks), $44.00 per Session, plus $844.00 bonus = $7,532.00 per month (before taxes).

    After 30% taxes…

    = $5,272.40 per month

    = $2,636.20 per 2 weeks (Pay Period)

Post It's Not What it Seems

Not sure if this is late but I just had to put in my two cents.

Canadian here, and I must say, you Americans have it rough.

Honestly, in my personal opinion, if anyone wants to make good money in the personal training industry private, corporate or freelance training is just the way to go. Period.

I have a college diploma in fitness and health (2 year program) and as soon as I graduated I found a job at a private gym that paid $30 an hour (and that was only the starting pay), they provided me with clients and I didn't need to make sales. Unfortunately I didn't accept the offer because of the distance, but I know for a fact that if I worked at any of those commercial gyms (Goodlife, LA etc.) I would not be making that money, not right at the start anyways. Commercial gyms don't give a **** about you and are all about the sales and its BECAUSE they can hire those 18 year olds who just have a CanfitPro cert, that's why the pay is so low. Commercial gyms are a great way to start though, especially as a beginner.

I know for a fact, that the gyms that REQUIRE a diploma or degree in fitness/kinesiology are the ones that will pay you well and treat you better. This is usually the corporate and private gyms that do this. Of course you can make good money freelancing too (if you also put in the work), but if you want to be comfortable and feel more "secure" by working for a company, this would be the place to go.

A lot of you have said "pay isn't the same as it used to be...times have changed..." The main reason is because the personal training industry is UNREGULATED, and these commercial gyms and others have just taken even more advantage of that and that's why the pay is so low in some areas. They know anyone just needs a weekend cert and they can call themselves a personal trainer. However, those that actually put time in schooling and got the cert are higher valued and as a result get better pay. Now that I'm working at a corporate gym I know I will never go back to commercial gyms ever again. Of course you can make a great living when you work for commercial gyms as well, but be prepared to not have much of a life.

Honestly, I personally believe that once the personal training industry becomes more regulated and there's more actual qualified personal trainers out there besides the ones who did weekend certs, the industry will get higher standards. Not to say that those who did weekend certs are "bad" personal trainers though!

But there's no debate that with personal training it's not like you can sit in the office and get your hourly pay. The time you're not training clients, you generally aren't getting paid, and that sucks, especially with all the sales pitching and research your doing, but that's part of the job. Every now and then I sometimes contemplate going back to school to go into a more regulated field and one that's more secure and make personal training my second career. However, I'm happy where I am right now, I work for a good company and have a great work/life balance.

The personal training industry is such a tricky business, but I hope you all will find your own individual success. Feel free to let me know what you think.
The cure for almost every problem or disease in this world: exercise.
Yet the world is too lazy to realize it.
    Just do it
    Period.

I have a question. I am a registered nurse and soon to become a nurse practitioner. What can I do if I became a personal trainer? The NASM type.

It is shocking how badly those big chain gyms pay PTs but it is about as much as I earn with my office job. I work for a big media planning and buying agency and I absolutely hate it! I am thinking about doing the PT course at Equinox some time next year. Do you guys have any experience with foreigners working at the gyms you`ve worked at? I am from Germany and therefore would need to find a gym that is willing to sponsor my visa. Is that realistic? (doesn`t seem like it now considering the pay)
That's awful about the media planning and buying agency! And I bet you have to work long hours. I used to work in corporate marketing and I know those from our agencies worked 12-14 hour days. The good $$ is in corporate marketing.

That being said, I can't tell you how many times I have considered going into personal training because of the stress of working 10 hour days with 100 emails an hour and nonstop meetings, fatigue, etc. that then hurts my health.

Totally agree. But there isn't a good platform in the market yet. We are building a free online platform that allow any personal trainers to marketing themselves, sell online workout programs and manage their virtual clients easily. People need this kind of tool to discover good programs and trainers.

Thank you so much for this information. I'm working on myself until May and from May on I am doing whatever it takes to become a personal trainer. Even the lowest tier pays greater than my dreaded physical 9-5 warehouse labor job where I hate what I do and feel no reason behind doing it. I want to help people, just like somebody helped me turn my life around several years ago. Working from the bottom up is better than staying at the bottom position I'm at now. I see LA fitness virtually selling personal trainer certs where you can certified to work as personal trainer staff in like 2 weeks flat for roughly $800. That to me doesn't seem right and If I was a client I wouldn't feel like I was getting the most from what I'm paying.

I wanted to respond and keep this valuable thread current. I read through many of the posts, and for the most part I would agree that at least in the commercial fitness centers you're going to not have a life, work a lot for a little, more of a salesperson than personal trainer (at least that is how your performance will be evaluated), and hopefully not burn out in the process. I have run several small businesses over the past 20 years (yes, I'm a serial entrepreneur!). However, I wanted to become a personal trainer not to start a new business venture per se, but out of a sincere desire to help people lead more healthy and fit lives (as I believe many personal trainers do too). My brief foray into the realm of fitness center sales/personal training is causing me to do some serious reconsideration & soul-searching.

I am 55, still in top physical condition, and have dedicated most of my life to fitness, exercise, and leading a relatively balanced life. So, I decided back in 2008 to get my personal trainer certification. Business demands, and newly-born grandchildren kept me from pursuing my goal at that time. But I kept current on fitness trends, and at the beginning of this year decided to go for it. I must admit I was completely naive to the culture of the modern fitness centers. I had belonged to gyms in the past, but things have changed considerably in the past 20 years.

Having applied and interviewed with several fitness centers I decided to go with 24 Hour Fitness. Boy did I get schooled! Now I have nothing bad to say at all about 24 Hour Fitness, as my brief time I was with them I did enjoy working with a few clients, and even performing their sales tool to personal training - the "Health Fitness Consultation."(H.F.C.) I learned a lot in a short period of time and in all I had a very favorable experience.

But, and there's always a but, there were some significant issues with the pay compensation, that I confess I probably did not fully understand in the interviewing process. It has been 14 years since I have been an employee, so I confess a certain amount of inexperience in the job search process. Essentially at 24 Hour Fitness, you are paid on a commission basis (nothing new here). You are also paid an hourly minimum wage. But this is where it gets a whole lot sticky-confusing. Your on-the-clock hours are essentially leveraged on a threshold against your commissions. So, if you worked 30 hours on-the-clock (this is an hourly minimum wage), even though you would be paid for the time, this amount would be deducted from your total commissions. Also, training time is paid through the commissions earned through sales of training packages, and you are not paid an hourly wage during training time (I understood this and have no problem with this either). So I posited a "hypothetical" to my manager, that it may be possible to lose your commission pay completely in a pay period if your hourly on-the-clock time absorbed all those commission (training) hours. Their reply was, "yes, it does happen." BIG RED FLAG! So basically my personal training sessions could wind up working for free.

The straw that broke the camel's back for me at 24 Hour Fitness was that I was told to go home after working on-the-clock for less than 2-hours, after having worked 5-hours the previous day, as I had no appointments for the day. I questioned the manager how was I supposed to build a clientele if I was not able to be at the club, walking the floor, and performing HFC's. They told me at most I was to be on-the-clock for 30 minutes to an hour and a half so that the club would not have to absorb my hourly wage should my commissions not be enough to cover those hours. In addition, I was to attend a mandatory, hourly paid on-the-clock, 2-day, 16-hour corporate training program, which essentially I was having to pay for (leveraged out of my commissions). Not to mention I was not able to train or sign up any new clients during this time.

This was enough for me to resign. I really didn't want to, I liked working there, but I was not going to work for free (without commissions paid out to cover my hourly wage). As I shared with the manager if I was 25 this probably wouldn't matter to me as much, but at 55 I simply am unwilling to exchange my valuable time for a minimal pay check. I also told them I felt they were tying my hands in building this "business" by limiting my non-training hours (I have never built a successful business working only 1 to 2 hours a day). Also, I wasn't looking to start a new business (they really muddy the distinction between independent contractor and employee - be advised). I was just wanting to train a few clients and make a few dollars in return.

Again, I have no bad feelings towards 24 Hour Fitness, and for the right person I think a great place to get experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume fitness center. If that is you, I cannot recommend this company enough. At this point in my life, it wasn't a great fit, I'm not desperate for work, so I am considering options, and hopefully will find the right place to work as a personal trainer, although being a novice in the fitness industry, I'm not sure where to turn. As I told my wife, if I have to work for free (or minimum wage), I will most likely volunteer my time at a community center, or some kind of special needs population facility - at least it meets my desire to help.

So I thought I'd share this in regards to compensation & pay at least from 24 Hour Fitness, and perhaps help somebody, in a situation like myself, who may have questions or misunderstood the nature of the pay structure as I understand it (I'm still confused to be honest) of this company. I would say that unless you absolutely need a job, don't let your desire to help others override your earned right to proper pay & compensation for being both a salesperson and a personal trainer.
