Well, to be fair, I was near the bottom of the ladder at Apple, I'm around the middle and and moving up at Strike. The pay in Apple retail is not that great, but it is significantly above other retail jobs. There is this massive divide between Apple retail and Apple corporate, and what I find upsetting/depressing is that more than one manager told me that the best way to cross it would be to leave the company and then come back. Few people move directly from retail to corporate, and in such cases they aren't taken seriously for the first year or so because there is this huge stigma in corporate about the retail team. This is changing for the better with the new head of retail, but it's still there. Which is retarded.
Having said all of this, Apple is still the best company I have worked for..

I make more than the hypothetical owner in the US, and I'm not even the venue manager =)
I started on the iPhone app so that I can launch into my own stuff. I want to be running my own business(es?) down the line and my current goal is to be self-sufficient and running at least one business in less than 2 years from now.
My current job is enjoyable and pays the rent and allows me to get started on this
But yes, you're right. I'm not looking for a career in venue management, by any means..

Good stuff, PM. You sound very ambitious. I wish you all the best. I like the idea of opening my own firm so long as I have some other partners (I refuse to open the "Law Offices of Manly", when Manly, Orlando, & Doritoson, LLP, sounds so much better). I also have to think about my family though. That would be unreal stress.

Gotcha. Yeah, I can see that app thing being an issue.
I could understand them saying that you can't write apps on company time, but what you're doing on your off time shouldn't matter.
Ha, actually sounds like a blast. I would love to get some free bowling time (and rock climbing).
This is definitely true.-

Depends on what stresses people. I was X to the nth times more stressed as an auditor working for a company and bosses (and making peanuts) than I ever was in sales or being independent/owner. Everyone's different. People are people. Next week I get papa.

At first glance lit would seem so but let's break down why they have that rule
-Apple is arguably the most valuable company in the world and as such, is very visible to the public and gets a lot or public scrutiny over even relatively minor things. Look at the attention that flared up around foxconn as an example - foxconn are a very big manufacturing company in China and actually have very very good working conditions for China, and they also make stuff for pretty much every major technology brand on the planet (e.g. Sony, Microsoft, Samsung, lg, etc etc to name but a few), and yet all of the attention from when that all happened reflected only on Apple. Now think about the scenario where an actual Apple employee has apps for sale in the App Store. Let's say one of them does reasonably well and is promoted on the front page of the App Store. Having worked at Apple I can absolutely say that if this happened it would solely be on the app's merit, but from the public eye, it would be very easy to accuse apple of playing favourites in this case. Looking back at the foxconn example and how much of a fuss was made over that, the media would have an absolute field day and the credibility of the App Store could very well be compromised.
-Apple also makes apps themselves. They don't write books. If I write a book and sell it, and make heaps of money while I work at Apple, that's fine. If I write an app and sell it and make heaps of money, I'm potentially competing in the same market as my employer. If this happens, is it because I have some inside knowledge about how the app market works or some special inside knowledge of the technology that gives me an edge over other app makers? (Spoilers: no. But again think of this from the outside media perspective)

All of this.
It's enough to live on I'm Sydney but not stellar
Median house price in Sydney is about $1.2-$1.5 million at the moment and rising.
I currently pay ~$850 in rent per month for my room in a 4 bedroom house (my other housemates pay similar amounts. The house rents for ~$3,000 per month, it's about 40 minutes away from the city centre, and this is considered cheap in Sydney)
So I'm not doing too badly but it's not a hot job by any means. But it's enabling me to make myself a hot job so I'm okay with it.

Actually this time last year our dollar was buying 0.95 USD and the year before that it was above parity (around $1.05). It died in the ass this year.
PM, you need to get out of Sydney. The cost of living there is stupid. I realize it's not a whole lot better up here but it's still an improvement.

Yeah pretty much the only thing keeping me here at the moment is the possibility of Dropbox working out. Their only Australian office at the moment is in Sydney. It would be a fairly good pay increase for not a whole lot more work.
Mum lives in Brisbane and my brother lives in Ballarat, so I'm very likely to end up in Brisbane or Melbourne within the next 2-3 years..

Hard to beat Sydney where you're surrounded by beautiful beaches but Brisbane is okay. This was the view from my balcony for many years.
Caught a nice sunset after a storm a few months ago.

Crysis 3 in 3D and 4k? lol
My new TV is 3D (the kind with the passive glasses) and I haven't even bothered to try it yet.
This is what I'm waiting to try. Currently way too much has to be done at the house before I can even think about gaming again. Much progress made over the last few days though. All Hail the Ultimate Master, "I Know More Than The Generals Do", Donald Camacho Dr. Pepper X-Ray AR-15 Trump
