I don't buy the whole positive discrimination thing. While I'm not black, I do have a very obvious physical disability (Cerebral Palsy for anyone interested. If unaware, think Walt Jr. from Breaking Bad. Strong Username to post content ratio.) Anyway, if affirmative action was as someone said, I would've been employed a long time ago. Worked my ass off to get a CCNA, and the only thing it's gotten me so far is past the resume filter. Maybe my resume is ****ty, maybe my interview skills are ****ty. Nonetheless, it's been difficult to find an entry level position. I've also noticed that a lot of the entry level stuff is bitch work and heavy lifting, which I can't perform. Disability laws say you have to provide REASONABLE accommodation, but the word reasonable seems largely up to interpretation depending on the employer. As long as they don't mention a disability specifically to the point where it can be seen as possible discrimination their asses are covered.
I love networking, and I'm going to continue to stay positive and I'm in the process of gathering materials that I'm going to use to try to get the CCNP. I just hope that an employer won't see me as just some paper cert because of it. While experience trumps all, I'm not one of those people who memorizes test dumps for a couple weeks and goes to get a cert. I'm considering retooling as a programmer because it's a job in which I could sit at a desk most of the day and not have to do strenuous physical activity. I guess I'll just continue to be diligent in the search. Crossing my fingers for someone to take a chance on me. We're all gonna make it brahs.

subnetting is annoying as phuck I only mastered it since I memorized all the common cidr. So if I get a question that ask for network with 255.255.255.252 subnet mask or /30 I immediately know there are only going to be 2 devices on that network.
My suggestion is figuring out the subnet mask so you can find the amount of hosts within a subnet. Im on mobile at the moment ill write a little tutorial when I get home tonight if you want.

Yeah, /30 is definitely important considering we talk a lot about site-to-site connections. Ya know what it is, I know how to subnet. If you tell me any cidr notation and say "Tell me the hosts and networks in this" I'll be able to tell you. It's finding the broadcast that confuses me.*Rest In Peace Dad. In on thread!
Came from data entry (out of HS) to data analyst (early 20s) to now a systems administrator (mid 20s)! Always been around technology, and have been tinkering with computers in general at home. Started troubleshooting things here and there, and have decided to make a career out of it.
Currently 2 years in with my company now and have been shadowing/apprentice (or young padawan as they call me) with a few super smart guys. I still consider myself a noob and still learning, but it's exciting to be around the things you enjoy!

It's real tho. I sat on the interview panel at a former job as an LEO and all else equal, they hire/promote females/minority races over a white male any day. We had a female who had been on patrol for less than a year and promoted to Sergeant (shift sup) skipping Corporal over guys who had been there for years + had leadership roles in the military. Another female skipped right to Lieutenant from Patrol (a step up from Sgt). All the other male leadership worked their way up the ranks. It's hard to ignore that kind of stuff when you see it on a first hand basis.
In a field where white males are a dime a dozen, the diversity initiative is pretty prominent.

Fuuuuuuukkkkkkk.
Free time at work today, old 3560G switch laying around.
Thinking it's time to mess around with this and build a lab in one of the empty rooms.
Find a console cable, fire that bad boy up, ready to take the dive and configure this bitch.
Password entered by the previous user isn't what we normally use.
No biggie, a guide or two, and I should be solid to get things going.
! Warning: The Switch is not usable !
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUKKKKK
Freak out, think I broke something.
Panic, read, read, read.
Hour goes buy.
Read the output after I reload
POST CAM test failed.
Hardware issue, from what I gather.
Now I will have to wait until my manager comes in on Monday to let him know I've begun making pretty metal paper weights of his stuff.2014 Misc Resolution: Negging no pics (screen captures of text don't count as pics)

Late response but here it is:
Lets say you're given an IP address of 10.10.100.117 /26, and you need to find the network and broadcast in which that IP lives on.
Here are my steps.
1. Write out the entire powers of 2: (too lazy to write it out so i pulled an image from google)
2. This is where you will need to know how IP addresses work and classful networks. Since /26 isn't classful you need to figure how many bits were borrowed. A /24 or 255.255.255.0 is classful and we can calculate that 2 bits were borrowed and added to /24.
We can look in the chart above and read it from left to right. Since we are borrowing 2 bit we are only using column 8 and 7. The last bit you borrow (column 7) will tell us how large the network is. So column 7 tells us it has 64 IP but 2 have to be thrown out and given for the broadcast and network ID. What you're left with are 62 usable IPs.
3.
Each network is 64 IPs large according to the chart. Anything in between the network ID and broadcast are the usable IP's in that range.
Network ID Broadcast
10.10.100.0 ------- 10.10.100.63
10.10.100.64 ------- 10.10.100.127
10.10.100.128 ------ 10.10.100.191
10.10.100.192 ------ 10.10.100.255
So 10.10.100.117 lives on the 10.10.100.64 network and the broadcast is 10.10.100.127.

I get it to a certain extent. For some reason, it's just not FULLY sticking. I'm trying to force myself to learn it, idk. In the real world you use subnet calculators anyways, lol.
I might just pick up a CCENT book. Idk, I'm just stressed right now. I was a Sysadmin and really enjoyed it. Now all of a sudden my job wants to move me to the SOC because we got down-sized in the one department. So now I have to learn all this new chit that I'm simply not use to.*Rest In Peace Dad. Never had an application for it, never needed to do it. If it ever came up it was because I was assisting a client with a product deployment and they had already specified ranges, etc. In fact, with things like product deployments you pretty much never just deploy based off of networks anyway, usually endpoint based.
Anyway, my new job is starting very shortly and I have to admit, I don't like the idea of working from home 90% of the time. The above post is a 100% complete lie
