Should be, but it's a joke now. Waiters expect these tips, regardless of service. The whole system is ridiculous. Think about it, if you tipped someone 10% they would probably sneer at you these days - the correct reaction should be that they're happy to get more than 0%. I'm not blaming the staff, I know in some states they get paid less in expectation of tips - but the system needs to be fixed. And unfortunately the only way to fix it is for people to either stop tipping, restaurants pay correct salaries and restrict large tips, minimum wage laws force it.

I'm a server/waiter
When I approach my table my routine goes like this:
Me: "Hey there, how are we doing today?
them: "good and you"
me: "Good, my name is Drvillain, and I'll be your server today. Real quick, though guys, do any of you lift?"
If they say yes, I instantly stop giving a fuk. I'll put their orders in last, and never refill because I have better things to do. I have maximized my tips with this method, because I can provide even better service to my other non lifting tables.
If I can clearly tell they lift by just looking, I wont even introduce myself. I'll just bring them some water and ask for their order.
No one likes you

I only tip if the chick is hot helping me and/or I go there often. Even though I often don't since I have a GF most of the time.
This is true except the latter isn't my problem. People need to start looking out for themselves instead of expecting others to do it for them. The people in the 30's and 40's didn't have the mindset and we shouldn't either.
Truth!
It is actually part of support capitalism, but not in the correct sense. A lot of things have been completely messed up over the years by the ignorant in society expecting a living wage by not working for it.
Or these folks can work towards developing a proper skill set to make money like the rest of us.

Lol at tipping 15% for bad service. If the service is bad I just leave without paying, ain't nobody gonna see my Benjamins without treating me like a king. If the service was good, they are lucky enough to get their bill paid. If they do their job extremely well and pamper me the whole time I'm there, I'll be so generous to toss them a buck and watch the waiters fight for it, lulz.

That's a mistaken way of looking at it. In reality, the tipping system adds a Quality control system to our restaurant industry.
If the employees earned a standard wage, then you, sitting at the table in a restaurant, are Faceless Customer #38 of the shift. They still get paid regardless.
By having a Tip system, then you, sitting at the table in a restaurant, are Potential Tipper #38 of the shift. They need to be nice to you and give good service to expect a tip from you.
So, if you look at the Tipping system as a Quality Control feature - it works very well and I gladly pay this tip in order to ensure the Waitress cares. The Waitress' salary is shared between the Restaurant Owner and the Customer, thereby empowering the Customer, so he/she can expect to be treated well.
All of you who have the money to eat out, and tip $0, are being selfish. And if you have a problem with the Waitress potentially earning $20/hour, why don't you quit your job and be a waiter then? Do you think it's fun to be nice to people all day, take orders, and run around bringing people stuff? I wouldn't want to do it, that's for sure.Ave Christus Rex

Have only not left a tip once. It just took so long to get my food, drink, even to take my order. Never got a refill. Had to wave her over for our cheques after asking once before.. It just wasn't good at all.
And then a chick I know that works there found out and told me "You made her lose money because she has to split her tips with the kitchen. Because you didn't leave a tip it came out of her pocket." And I laughed and said that I didn't leave a tip, why would she split her wages to makeup for no tip.
Fukkin dumb kontPIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.
GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?
GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.
GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.

I tip in the 10 to 20 percent range, but honestly...i rarely go out to eat. I would much rather cook the food myself than have some heroin addict in the kitchen cooking for me.

Wtf is up with this ****gy tipping culture. Why pay these failures a tip for bringing plates over to your table. THAT IS THEIR JOB. Why should customers have to pay their wages, it is the employers responsibility lmao.
Do you *******s also tip the mailman for bringing you your post? or the delivery driver? The bin man? The milkman? Paper boy?

Not sure where you've been... I haven't heard of 10% being considered a "good tip" in over 20 years. 10% is considered a mediocre tip (especially if your meal only costed 10 bucks or under), with 15-18% being a good tip, and 20%+ being a great tip.
In all seriousness though, I tend to ignore the percentages unless I'm eating somewhere really expensive and I want to make sure I don't phuck a waiting staff over too badly. If I pay say, 10 bucks at a cheap diner for a meal, I'll give them a much as a $3 tip (30%). if they did a very good job. That said, I'm not giving someone $30 on a silver platter for serving my wife and I a one hundred dollar meal when they did the exact same amount of work as a cheap diner worker, only their chit happens to cost a lot more money - in their case, I'll give them 10 bucks if the service wasn't very good, 15 bucks if it was good, and 20 bucks if the service was GREAT.
Keep in mind that where I'm from, restaurants are required to pay their waiting staff minimum wage already. That's not a great wage, but if you expect me to pay you at a rate of $27.25 bucks an hour for one hour or less of serving me ($20 from tip, the rest minimum wage) in a restaurant, you'd better do a damn good job. And I don't care if the meal costed $10 for a family or $100, I will leave a $0 on the tip line if you do a horse chit serving job, and threaten to spit in my food next time all you want, because there won't be a next time for me at a restaurant that phucked up that badly. There's way too many choices in restaurants to be a repeat customer at one that gives you a terrible first experience.Last edited by ItsBrettFavre; 03-11-2015 at 01:03 PM.

So what are you suggesting here? That jobs that don't have a tipping system are going to result in staff members not performing their role as they should do?
Surely the idea that if you don't do what's required of you in the role you'll get sacked should be enough motivation.
It's not like replacement waiters are difficult to come by.
The job market suggests there is enough incentive as is to just have a job.
i don't receive tips in my job... i still do my upmost to perform the role to the best of my ability.

Being unwilling to ever break the 20% threshold is bullchit when you walk into a place and spend like $7 on a meal with a $5 special and a soda, though... that's what, a $1.40 tip for someone who may have quite possibly done just as much work, and possibly a better job than someone whose cheapest bill at a Red Lobster (just an example) or some chit is going to be almost $20 for one person, giving them a $4 tip instead automatically for the same amount of work?
That's bullchit, man. I stick to percentages pretty closely on spendy meals, but am willing to go over them for great service at inexpensive places.
