Just now starting to train a few clients. I train out of my home most of the time, but I'm curious if, to train a client in a gym (where the trainer isn't an employee or contractor), do most gyms require the trainer have a membership? I understand the trainee does, but I felt it was worth asking since I have no idea.
Thank you!

The gym has to allow you to use their facilities. You must either be hired to work at the gym or contract with them to do so. Gyms are VERY strict on this point, not only is it a money issue but it's also a liability issue as well.
Trainers who train clients in a gym who are not authorized to do so are deleggitimizing the industry and other fitness professionals.Joe King MS, NASM CPT, PES, CES, SNS

The gym would usually require you to become an employee or contractor. They're not going to let you use their facilities (and potentially damage their equipment or injure their customers) without you buying the right to do so.

Hi Michael, most of the big box gyms would frown on you training people at their facility because it takes away from their own personal training force and it might even be a liability for them in case you injured somebody while on the premises (lawyers could tell you more about that). Even if you are a member, they would probably not like you doing this.
Remember if you train at your home, you should have personal trainer insurance too.
