I am not rich, but my family is on the upper end of middle class. If I ask him straight out "So, what do you do?" seems like it will just lead to embarrasment, but then, if I sit and talk to him and completely ignore asking about his line of work that will also look sus

Btw I have no problem whatsoever with it, everyone has to have a job. I'm just thinking of it from the view of making things easier on everybody

I would avoid it unless he brings it up. I don't think he has any reason to be ashamed of it, but at the same time there is nothing to be gained really from bringing it up. You can make small talk in a thousand other ways.

Make a comment about the statues with something like "Where'd you get them all?". A nice way to talk about it without directly bringing it up. You also don't have to bring it up at all.

Also the average salary around here for a garbage truck driver is like 60k so he's probably not making dirt at this job either, he's probably not embarrassed.

City workers can make a lot of money in jobs like that, we're talking $70k+ great benefits and pensions. This could potentially put you on the upper end of middle class.
