After the first cook, do do you remember what Walt said to Jesse when Jesse was like "THIS IS ART MR. WHITE!" and Walt says, "No Jesse, this is basic chemistry." Just about any illicit recreational synthetic drug can be made by someone who has gone through an organic chem class in college (definitely not a high school chem class). They do require a process and controls to get to that level of quality, but it's also not like just following a recipe either, which is probably why most cooks will use the easier method with pseudo instead of P2P with methylamine. The easier method also allows you to use easily obtainable equipment and precursors.

I don't think Grey Matter is going to be mentioned again, because it was just a plot device. It helped to establish part of Walt's M.O. and to highlight his ego and pride. The company hasn't been mentioned since what... the 2nd season? Maybe the 3rd when Skyler and Gretchen talk? Everything having to do with Grey Matter has been to help establish Walt's character, but it was never a component of the actual plot. And I doubt there would be room for that many meth players in ABQ, between Gus and the cartels - it's a saturated market. Not to mention, the ostentatious display of wealth by Elliot and Gretchen (she drives a frigging Bentley). It would be extremely stupid to bring that much attention to themselves. I don't know how you guys are even making a connection between Grey Matter and meth. Nothing in the show (unless I missed it) suggests Grey Matter is anything but a legitimate and successful business. Where are you guys getting this?

He's dealing with a multi billion dollar meth network. Only large companies can fund that sort of business and be able to hide it.
I personally don't think we have seen the last of Gray matter tech.
As much as a lot of of us call Walt a bish for turning down his former partner, there had to be a good reason and his ex isn't it.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*

I'm trying to understand this Gray Matter theory. With what money does Gray Matter fund the meth industry if the foundation of the company is meth? There would have had to have been some financial success prior to entering the meth business.
Also, if Walt's ex-friend was also a gifted chemist why wouldn't he just make the blue meth from the start? He could have captured both the manufacturing and distribution aspects of the supply chain if their specialty is indeed funding and distribution.

BTW did you guys see how Hank's garage door went down slowly? That's a reflection of Walt slowly changing into a dark person.
Not srs, but this is how a lot of you guys sound like.

Are these Grey Matter theories serious? Here's how Walt actually got into the meth business: Jesse - a person who already knows how to cook it - taught Walt and Walt refined his recipe because he is a genius chemist already.

It's just something to think about since that episode after Walt turns his ex partner down he goes HAM about making the best meth in the world to Pinkman. They never fully explained why Walt also sold his shares for peanuts and walked away. Most people just assumed it was over the girl.

I feel like this connection/outcome would be way too forced and I don't see how it would tie in properly to explaining Walt's motivation to do well. What I gathered from his speech to Jesse was that he once had a chance to be great, to be the best, at something and gave it up. Now that he is the best at something again he's not letting go of it. It would be very coincidental for both Walt and Gray Matter to find opportunity in the meth business and this would have to be the case for this outcome to take place. The company's beginning could not have had anything to do with meth because then Walt would have this knowledge. He would be aware that his efforts are only making his ex-friend richer if that were the case. I do not believe that would be something he would be interested in doing.

Walt never flat out said it. For him to walk away from the company he felt he started with his ego? I highly doubt it was over pussy.
Anyone can say the same, "I gave up (insert whatever) because I was young and needed the cash."
Does anyone here know exactly what Gray Matter Tech. does?
Meh I could be wrong as hell and Gray Matter has nothing to do with the international Meth industry, but I would not be surprised if they are the ones that front and launder the money for blue. Like I said, it's just a thought.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*

What multi-billion dollar meth industry?
Walt's business was boot-strapped. The original equipment was stolen from the school. The ingredients were gotten by Jesse (pseudo from the smurfs). They nickel and dimed before hooking up with Tuco. Profits were then rolled back into the business, and they upgraded their equipment when they switched to P2P, and stole the methylamine, which allowed higher purity, leading to higher revenues and profit margins. Gus funds their mega-lab and pays them a salary of $3 million to cook for him. So, by this time, they have the financial security to allow Walt to branch out on his own (and kill Gus.) The ABQ market is now basically his. This allows him to buy Vamanos as a front for his business, and he has enough start-up capital to equip himself, but they still steal the methylamine (after failing to get it from Lydia.) That's how Walt's business was funded; no outside investment save Gus' lab. Gus is a little less clear, but it's been assumed he had ill-gotten gains either from his time in Chile, or from working with the cartel, laundering money through Pollos Hermanos and his other businesses. He is also able to get equipment through the Germans, who probably helped establish Gus' business by investing in Pollos Hermanos. Historically, the Chileans and the Germans have had economic ties, so that makes sense.Daily Electronic Music Enlightenment Thread - Come on Down to the Underground

Are you serious? That's like saying who is selling burgers now that McDonalds is out of business. There is more than one drug lord in the world and the odds that Walt would somehow be connected to both of them is way too astronomical to be believable. This is just like all of the symbolism people are fishing for in this thread - nonsense.

That's what I'm saying. Gus didn't control meth internationally. There are regional cooks all along the globe and Walt controls his territory. He left Grey Matter because he was in a tough spot financially (which is what he said to Jesse) but it was probably because of an emotionally driven altercation between Walt and Gretchen. It's possible that Walt lied and said he did it because he was in a tough spot financially in order to look less foolish. Now he doesn't want to leave another big operation out of some stupid reason because, like he said, he's the best at it and that doesn't happen everyday.

I thought I knew why he turned it down aka pity job, but for him to go from HS Chem teacher to, "Pinkman we are going to make the best cottdamn meth ITT NAO." without a pause is a bit weird and there could be a LOT more to it. That's all I am saying.
There is or are some people that do control the money flow and launder that money, and a big multinational bio-chem corporation would actually be a good place to start. Just a thought.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*

Walt tells Jesse about the company he and his two friends started, their big dreams, their understanding of the unlimited potential of ideas that hadn’t yet germinated. Then, Walt says, “something happened… I’m not going to go into detail…for personal reasons” he took a buyout of his third of the business for $5,000. Now, Walt explains, the company is worth $2.16 billion. He checks the valuation every week, torturing himself about how cheaply he sold his “potential” and his 'kids’ birthright.”
it's always about pussy or $$$
and yes I too hated the fly episode

He might be checking the valuation to see what the competition or the big guys are bringing in. Yes that fly episode was a srs waste of an hour. Dunno what happened there, but pretty much every BB fan was mad as fukk over that one haha.
I refuse to believe that anyone will walk away from billions of dollars over pussy. I don't care how good that pussy is, no man as wiley as W.W. is playing that game.*Stopped smoking crew* 2 years and 5 month bishes, and counting.*

It was slow and claustrophobic, reminded me of a Tarantino scene. But, I think it helped to establish Walt's mindset and the constant battling in his head. I'm of the opinion that Walt isn't pure evil, but very driven, like an ******* CEO, who most people will hate as a person, but admire for their drive and success, as well as the ability to make hard decisions. I think Walt does pull back at the end of 5A, and has made a decision to quit, but is still pretty torn. Even the last scene with Hank, I feel that he's pained when he's delivering that last line. Dude is struggling, but... he's still got to protect what is his, even if it comes off as "evil." Good/evil... it's so black and white, but really... everything is GREY MATTER. Bwahaha.
