or do similar activities like cycling? I'm not talking about traipsing in the woods, I'm talking about walking steep rugged terrain and rock scrambling all day or over multiple days. In your experience, does this type of activity cause muscle catabolism or otherwise interfere with strength training?
Thanks.
P.S. I can't rep for a while because I'm a newbie and I got a little promiscuous with the repping yesterday.

I run on trails several times a week. I live 10 min from the Appalachian Trail and my daughters and I hike on it most Sunday afternoons.
Thousands of people lift and run or hike or whatever. It's hard to find the time and energy to do everything, but plenty of guys stay strong while doing it.

Thanks man. I got my reps back so I threw you one.
What you say is what I figured, but I don't have a lot of experience under my belt with lower body lifts. My legs and ass are decent just from the hiking plus I think I have good hindquarter genetics. I'm getting seriously into squats and deadlifts now and was wondering what I could expect. A few years back I was deadlifting and I found that it actually helped my hiking by strengthening my posterior for uphill. I also found it easier to carry the pack because my traps were stronger. He not busy being born is busy dying. - Bob Dylan

Hiked Mt Washington in NH a couple of years ago after around 10 months of crossfit, did not have any trouble with it, my brother and his friend did little in the way of fitness other than the odd hike here and there and they were destroyed the next day. I have a interest in hiking multiple days but cant find the time, will probably be doing some rucking this spring for off day cardio tho. Look up "Grouchyjarhead" in the journals.....he does some interesting stuff with a rucksack. Please record my time/reps if I pass out

Desert hiking is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world. I don't think it interfered with my strength training, and may have helped, but I know for a fact tht my scrambling ability improved in a major way when I started lifting weights.
I haven't been able to do it for the last year or so, and it's not something that you can do much of in the summertime in my part of the world, but I'm very much looking forward to starting it up again. I have several destinations in mind already.“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
