will running make my legs smaller?

school is starting for me soon and I've been thinking about joining the track team. will all this running make me lose gains?

No, but in the short term you may experience an adjustment period wherein your legs lose a little strength. That will pass once you become used to the running. As long as you can continue to lift and get stronger, you won't lose anything.
