Can someone explain to me why it's racist to wear make up that makes you look like the character that you're trying to look like?
if I had a halloween costume and used blackface makeup to look like lil wayne, why is that racist.

Because it was done in stage shows in which blacks were portrayed as inferior beings at a time when they were treated as such.
By wearing blackface, you are stating you agree with those ideals.

Something to do with the 1920's or something. When they did it back then they would dress up in blackface and portray an ignorant black person? Not racist in the context you are portraying it in.

Same. Out of all the things to get upset about, it seems pretty silly to me. That is just me though.

It was used to push black sterotypes through entertainment in the 19th century and now has a bad reputation

Lol I've wondered this too.
Michael Jackson painted himself white and there was literally zero uproar over THAT....Spoiler alert; you die at the end.

what??
No, but that's not true.
Maybe it's true that people wore black face paint and made fun of black people as inferior beings.
But if I did it today, I'm not AUTOMATICALLY forced to agree with those ideals. I'm just wearing a costume to look like a character, and that character happens to be black. Anything else is just ignoring Race.
Racism isn't the acknowledgement that races exist.
Being against Racism doesn't mean to ignore that races exist.Neg "Neat" posts on sight. *******s.

Because blackface?
I do agree with you though. I don't understand it being offensive nowadays seeing as most people mean no ill will when they put it on. It'd be best if you didn't do it because most people probably associate it with black face from history.Serving life in prison with Gynecomastia and no parole.

Not personally offended by it but I know it was used in the past as a way to mock black people by white actors long ago. Actors would use black face to and put on performances with racist and stereotypical undertones.

I saw a white guy with it Thursday night, he had the face on with dreads.
At first I felt weird because it was the first time I saw it in real life then I thought about it and realized the poor guy probably just wanted to dress up like a Rastafarian....probably meant no harm and the other black people around didn't seem to mind.
Blackface has a racist historical presence which is why its frowned upon but I wouldn't attack someone if I saw them wearing it....unless they were purposely doing something to cause a stirI love Nissan ...*|Misc Strength Crew|*...>October 16th 2009, Never Forget <

It's because blackface originated in racist minstrel shows that were done to mock black people. blackface is NEVER ok.

it's mostly this brahs. totally understand that if u dress up as a black person it doesn't make u racist and there's nothing inherently wrong or disrespectful about it. the use of this particular costume in history though has forever tarnished its reputation, simple as that.
it's kinda like the hitler moustache. if u wanna have that style of facial hair then no of course it doesn't make u white supremacist or jew hater or anything like that, but u can bet a lot of money that most people are going to find it in poor taste and shake their head.
there's nothing inherently offensive about a lot of things, they're just offensive because of what they're associated with. some things will forever carry negative connotations, black mask is arguably one of them.
