i think it has something to do w/ digestion. if you are on a high calorie diet and eatings tons of food, this will help w/ the digestion process. but to be sure, try the search

to build muscle i think you want to add 1.5-2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. (245-330g). if you can't get it from food alone add whey. if you can afford both, try it.
