We've got a latex hybrid mattress. Tried memory foam and it was just too damn hot. Maybe I should ditch the box spring for a platform frame though.

I've seen those also and i certainly would consider that route.
Any way to ditch all the mattress/box spring bulk is quite preferable.

Recently opened up a previously decommissioned hazmat storage container in Baltimore that had a homeless guy living inside. This is what it looked like.

Considering the fabric on the bottom of the box spring is about as thick as tissue paper, surprised it doesn't look worse. Besides, it's facing the ground, who cares. If you're really worried about it, get a stable gun and some fabric and redo it.
